Becoming a doctor in Germany

It will normally take you 6 years and 3 months to complete a Medical degree in Germany. This period can be split into several stages:

  • First stage of studies: 4 semesters (2 years) followed by the first 3 sections of the state examination
  • Second stage of studies: 6 semesters (3 years)
  • Practical year (PJ): complete one year of practice at a German hospital or a clinic
  • State examination: pass the second and final state examination, after which you receive your licence to practise medicine in Germany
