Akash is currently studying an M.Sc. in Computer Aided Conception in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. We asked Akash about his experience abroad.
What is your name and age? Where are you from?
My name is Akash and I'm 23 years old. I am from India.
What is the name of your university, study programme? When did you start studying?
I am studying in RWTH Aachen in Computer Aided Conception and Production Engineering. I started studying in October 2016.
What were your main priorities when choosing your university and your programme? How did you decide?
RWTH is an awesome top-ranked university. RWTH University has good research and development facilities. Curriculum of the CAME course I have joined (Computer Aided in Mechanical Engineering) is what caught my attention. So I chose CAME in RWTH Aachen.
What were the main challenges you had to face before being accepted to your university? How did you overcome it?
The main challenges that I faced was lack of time. I had very little time to apply for the university and for the German Visa. Preparing CV, cover letter, letter of recommendation and taking student loan consumed a lot of time. Fortunately, everything fell into its place eventually. I had to plan well to get the job done in time.
What are three things you like most about the university? Why?
I liked the university itself—because of the widespread campus and the on-going research, the study plan. As I have said before, CAME curriculum is a tailor made course which includes recent ongoing developments, teaching. Professors teach really well. They are highly talented and make the subject more interesting.
If you could improve anything about the university, what would it be? How do you plan to improve it?
The university is very good. I would have liked it more if our curriculum had practical classes.
What are three things you like the most about the city? Why?
Weather, other students, and transportation. It is student friendly. Aachen also has Lindt where we can get very good chocolates and also, the beer is quite cheap compared to my home country.
If you could improve anything about the city, what would it be?
The city is perfect for international students because RWTH has students from all across the world. The rent is also student friendly. I love the ASEAG pass with which I can travel the whole city for free in buses or trains.
What was the biggest surprise in your study adventure? Do you like it?
I was surprised about how well the study program is planned. Students from different cultural background study in RWTH. The management takes into account all the students and designs the study program. Yes, I like it.
How would you rate your experience on a scale from zero to ten (0 – It is/was a total disaster, 10 – I have/had the time of my life)?
I would rate it 9/10 because the journey so far in Germany has been wonderful. Aachen is a perfect city for students. It is very good for travelling as well because it is very close to the Netherlands and Belgium border.
What are your future plans after graduating?
I have no future plans for now. I would like to travel across Europe. European countries are beautiful.

Pontstraße is a good place to hang out because it has many restaurants and pubs. I also like Lousberg mountain which is also the highest place in Aachen. The trek to the top is good and it is very peaceful at the top. We can almost see the whole of Aachen from the peak.
