History
The GSSS had a long-standing tradition in graduate education at the University of Bremen. It was founded as part of the establishment of the Collaborative Research Center 186 "Status Passages and Risks in the Life Course" in 1988. With the financial support of the VolkswagenStiftung, the CRC then turned into the Graduate School of Social Sciences in 2002.
Education
The curriculum represents the three-year educational program leading to the doctorate. The BIGSSS curriculum is based on models of advanced tertiary education and follows a demand-tailored approach. BIGSSS Fellows take a mandatory series of courses, incl. research colloquia, as well as theory, methods and soft-skills courses that are mainly tailored to their research interests. The BIGSSS curriculum employs a system of credit points (ECTS).
Research
BIGSSS is based on the collaboration among a number of outstanding research institutes at the two universities and can draw on a prodigious social-science landscape both at the University of Bremen and Jacobs University. This cooperation facilitates the early integration of doctoral students into a strong research environment, and ensures a cutting-edge research orientation in BIGSSS' curricular and thematic development.

During my study experience, there were several aspects that I truly enjoyed. Firstly, I appreciated the depth and breadth of knowledge that I gained in my field of study. The curriculum was well-structured and covered a wide range of topics, providing me with a solid foundation. Additionally, I found the interactions with my professors and fellow students to be intellectually stimulating and inspiring. Engaging in discussions, collaborating on projects, and exchanging ideas enriched my learning journey. However, there are always areas for improvement. One aspect that could be enhanced is the practical application of the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom. While theoretical knowledge is crucial, incorporating more hands-on experiences, internships, or real-world projects could better prepare students for professional challenges. Furthermore, incorporating more interdisciplinary approaches and encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration would foster a more holistic understanding of complex issues. Overall, my study experience was highly rewarding and transformative. It equipped me with the necessary skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities to pursue my desired career path. It not only broadened my intellectual horizons but also nurtured personal growth by fostering independence, resilience, and a passion for lifelong learning. I am grateful for the opportunities I had and the invaluable experiences that have shaped me academically and personally.
