Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences About

The university was named after Alanus ab Insulis (ca. 1114 - 1203 A.D.) who taught the seven liberal arts as part of a human centred approach to education. As early as the twelfth century, his idea was to teach a broad range of skills as a way of cultivating essentially human qualities.

History

In 1999 after almost 30 years of running Alanus as an Further Education institution, initial talks begin with the relevant ministry in Düsseldorf with the aim of gaining state recognition for the Alanus courses and qualifications. The first restructuring of the courses takes place in order to meet national university guidelines.
