Bard College Berlin was founded in 1999 as the European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) by a group of German intellectuals and entrepreneurs, with the aim of providing a high-quality, small-group seminar, and teaching-oriented international program of advanced study for undergraduates of particular promise wishing to study in English.
True to the principles of liberal arts education, Bard College Berlin offers interdisciplinary programs in the humanities and social sciences, with a strong focus on individual growth and the development of essential skills in writing and thinking. Students engage in an integrated inquiry into the intellectual and cultural history of the contemporary world before choosing to specialize in an area of the humanities or social sciences (economics, politics, art, or literature). Qualifying students earn both an American BA and a German BA.

At the start of each semester, Student Life staff orchestrate a mandatory Orientation for all incoming students. Orientation typically lasts 2-3 days and also includes trips or excursions around Berlin. Students use this time to settle in, connect with peers and familiarize themselves with the institution.
Orientation equips students for a successful academic career at Bard College Berlin. The Orientation provides students with information on class registration and degree requirements and gives them the opportunity to connect with both their Academic Advisor and current students.
Bard College Berlin has a vibrant residential life. The Residential Life staff engages residents in providing a safe and active community in the residence halls. All un-moderated students (BA first and second year, and Academy Year) live on campus in residence halls. Each building has a student Residential Assistant who provides both programming efforts and 24/7 on-call coverage for emergency situations. Additionally, there are full time staff members on call for emergency situations.
Bard College Berlin has established a small but highly specialized library since 2002, in which faculty and students alike find material ranging from text books to most recent specialist studies on philosophy, literature and literary criticism, cultural studies, art history and film studies, as well as history, religion, sociology, economics, and political science.
Having health insurance is a legal requirement in Germany. Students studying at a state-recognized college or university in Germany are also legally required to have a valid health insurance for the duration of their enrollment.
Students have the possibility to speak confidentially to a professional counselor about any personal difficulties.Bard College Berlin's campus is mainly comprised of 8 renovated former GDR embassies, each with a wonderful garden, one renovated former factory building, which serves as an art practice space, one renovated traditional Berlin apartment building, and one newly-built residence hall designed by Atelier Kempe Thill (inaugurated in 2019). The 8 main buildings were designed in the 1960s in the neo-Bauhaus style by the architect Eckart Schmidt. They now function as comfortable residence halls, spacious faculty offices, a library, studios and performance space, and administration buildings. All buildings are within a short walking distance of one another, and of transport services to the center of Berlin.
Bard College Berlin's campus, with its green spaces and close proximity to four parks, offers the resources for team and individual athletic activities.
SPOK facilities:Students at Bard College Berlin are encouraged to create their own Student Organizations. Over the years, many groups have started and done amazing things; some examples include our Student Parliament; the Politics, Rhetoric, and Debate Club; and numerous other art, theater, academic, outdoor and popular interest clubs. Whether through Civic Engagement projects or common interests, students are supported by the College to be creative in their co-curricular work.
