The origins of the Institute can be traced back to the 1880s when the Jesuits established a School of Philosophy and a School of Theology at Milltown. The Faculty of Theology at the Milltown had its roots, through an unbroken history, in the Jesuit School of Theology which was founded there in 1889.
Milltown Studies, published by the Milltown Institute since 1977, promotes research in philosophy, theology (in all its branches), spirituality, literature, cultural studies and history. It is published twice a year (winter and summer editions) and is a peer review journal.The Dublin Lonergan Centre is a research facility for the study of the works of the Canadian philosopher-theologian, Bernard Lonergan. Its collection of primary sources comprises his books and articles and tape-recordings of his lectures. Its collection of secondary sources contains books, articles and theses on his work by other scholars, and invaluable author and subject catalogues to these resources.
