History
Education and research with a 500-year-old tradition: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range of academic subjects in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine. The oldest and largest university in Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1817 when the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502) merged with Friedrichs University Halle (founded in 1694).
Education
The university offers a range of minor subjects, some of which are only offered in Germany at MLU.
Research
MLU’s academic profile in the field of the humanities is shaped by the core research areas “Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge” and “Society and Culture in Motion. Diffusion - Experiment - Institution”. The university’s core scientific research is in “Materials Science – Nanostructured Materials” and “Biosciences – Structures and Mechanisms of Biological Information Processing”. Agricultural sciences also play a leading role and Halle’s university bears sole responsibility in Saxony-Anhalt for developing this academic profile.
Career
Working and conducting research in academia offer a lot of opportunities for networking and career planning. Today, the concept of a “job for life” is not valid in many professions and companies. However, as a highly skilled and qualified researcher there are a lot of career opportunities in economy and industry. Scientists should be able to transform their capabilities into job-oriented skills and career possibilities to connect themselves with potential employers.
Career planning is as vital as planning experiments. Researchers need to be familiar with their skills, should know how to establish their own brand with self- marketing and develop a strategic view on the career landscape to be successful.

Degree programme: Mathematics (B. Sc.)
In Mathematics (B. Sc.), students learn the basics of Mathematics (Analysis, Linear Algebra) in groups of up to around 120 other mathematics students. In the first year, bachelor students are put together with students who study for the teaching post. Especially for the first year, there are many occasions for getting in contact with each other and to get help regarding the weekly homework. For example, there is the so-called Mathetreff (Maths venue) where first semesters find help for difficult mathematical problems they can't solve themselves. In later years, there are more and more subjects where bachelor students are treated serperately, so there are groups with around 10 students. This group size results in the big advantage that students can be much more in contact with the professors and lecturers. Generally, the mathematical community at this university is almost familial, most professors and lecturers are pretty young and I find absolutely no reason to feel uncomfortable. But even if needed, there is also a very affable equal opportunity commissioner who one can consult.
Ich finde es toll, dass an der Uni Halle im Bereich Mathematik alles sehr familiär ist. Der Campus ist wunderschön und es gibt leckeres (auch veganes) Essen in der Mensa.
I really like the university and the campus. U will find quiet places to work but also enough people to talk with. First year students will get a lot of support. There is a week before the lectures are starting. You will get to know the city and the campus so you won’t get lost. You will also get help for your homework during the first and second semester in the “Mathetreff” where you can also find friends. The professors are friendly. All in all it’s familiar at the Math campus. It’s also the campus for physics and chemistry.
All courses where taught in theory no practices

In addition to the Weinberg Campus, MLU has three other main locations. The centrally located University Square is one of the most beautiful university squares in Europe and it is a site in Halle that is steeped in tradition. Many institutes focusing on the humanities and social sciences are located on the new Steintor Campus. Educationalists and theologians teach, study and conduct research at the Francke Foundations.
