Located in the centre of a city on a human scale, the university is only two hours away from Paris and one hour from prestigious sites such as Mont Saint-Michel or Saint-Malo. Building on our assets and committed to taking part in 21st-century innovation and knowledge, one of our top priorities is to create a vibrant international university.



Université de Rennes 1 is the direct predecessor of Brittany's first university, founded in Nantes in 1461 by François ll, Duke of Brittany.  After its official dissolution in 1793, the ducal university became an imperial, secular and independent university, in 1808 in Rennes and the west. The decree of 23rd December 1970 created Université de Rennes 1 as we know it today.

The international residence Paul Ricœur in the heart of Rennes provides accommodation and catering for international researchers.

Student Life

Campus life

Rennes is the historical and administrative capital of Brittany, a dynamic and friendly city, home to a large community of researchers and students representing around 32 % of the population.

The centre is a mix of half-timbered houses lining narrow streets and majestic 18th century buildings overlooking spacious public squares. A river, La Vilaine, runs through the city whilst a large botanical garden, the Thabor in the north-east, provides a peaceful green area for workers, students and city dwellers.

Sports facilities

Sport at Université de Rennes 1 is open to both students and staff, whatever your level. Most sports or activities can be evaluated as part of your curriculum.

The university has sports facilities to suit a wide range of activities: swimming pools, a dojo, a sports centre, a gym as well as tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. 

Student clubs

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is the key volunteer student organisation in international higher education in Europe. Founded in 1989, it provides opportunities for cultural and self-development under the prinicple of Student helping Student.
