  • University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science

To strengthen the marine profile, the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment was established at the University of Gothenburg in 2008.

The Faculty of Science includes all the major subject areas in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences. We offer national degree programmes and courses, as well as international Master's Programmes.

Our degree programmes are complete educational programmes of high quality, leading to the awarding of a Bachelor's degree.

Students also have the possibility to combine different courses to obtain an education with a personal profile. The Faculty offers over 100 courses, some of them in English and open to Exchange Students.

Our Master's programmes are of high quality and are closely connected to our research.

The University of Gothenburg is at the forefront of European marine research. Most of the marine research is conducted at the Faculty of Science.

Centres of expertise and research at the Faculty of Science:
  • Centre for Marine Evolutionary Biology
  • Centre for Sea and Society
  • Centre for Skin Research
  • Gothenburg Centre for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology
  • Mathematics - Physics platform (MP2)

Welcome to the Faculty of Science. We offer different positions for advancing your science career – from postdoc positions and research fellowships to senior lectureships and full professorships.

The Faculty of Science includes all major subject areas in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences. With 5,800 students and 800 employees, it is the second largest Faculty at the University of Gothenburg.

Should you join one of the departments at the Faculty of Science, you will find an internationally-oriented environment that fully endorses equality and diversity throughout the organisation. Housing services

  • High Quality
Swedish homes are generally of high quality. Wooden houses painted in light colours are very typical for the Swedish west coast, although the area offers a lot of architectural variety. Scandinavian interior design is characterised by light and openness, with large windows and light colours.
  • Short Distances
The area has a well-developed public transport system in and around the city, which makes it easier to find housing within reasonable commuting distance. Commuter trains and busses make it easy to travel to nearby communities such as Alingsås, Kungsbacka, Kungälv and Borås.

Medical services

  • Child Care

All children whose parents are working or studying are offered childcare starting at age one, in either a preschool or a family day nursery.

  • Healtcare and Social insurance

If you live or work in Sweden, you are covered by Swedish social insurance. This means that you, for example, only have to pay a set fee when you visit the doctor or are in hospital.

Student Life

Campus life

Gothenburg is situated on the west coast of Sweden and is the largest port in Scandinavia; thus the city has become a natural centre for marine research. This research includes marine chemistry, oceanography and various biological disciplines.

Some of the biology departments are located near the Sahlgrenska Academy, an arrangement that provides a favourable base for the life sciences. In this area, the Faculty of Science and the Sahlgrenska Academy work together to stimulate common areas, such as cell and molecular biology. There are modern and well-equipped facilities for research in natural sciences and biotechnology at the Lundberg Laboratory.
