The university's origins can be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856, which eventually became the Southampton College of Art. Mergers with the Southampton College of Technology, and later the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash, led to the establishment of the Southampton Institute of Higher Education in 1984.

Student accommodation is more than just a roof over your head – the place you live can have a real impact on how well you settle into university life. With six halls of residence and established links with the private rental sector, our dedicated accommodation service are here to make sure that every Solent student is happy and safe within their home.
Solent’s six student residences cater to a range of requirements and are great places to work, relax and meet new friends. The majority of University-owned accommodation is reserved for first-year students, but there are also provisions for returning students, postgraduates, officer cadets and summer students.
The library and learning services (LLS) aim to provide resources, services and expertise which will support the University’s staff and students in their teaching, learning and research.
You can expect from us a pleasant and welcoming environment where you can study and work individually and in groups and access to a range of services and resources that are relevant to your learning and research.
Access to the internet at Student Residences is via WiFi, provided by StudentCom. StudentCom is the exclusive provider of broadband services in Southampton Solent University student residences.
All resident students will have up to 40mb broadband access FREE of charge. Other broadband options are available at additional cost if required.
Throughout the academic year, the counselling service runs a variety of free workshops and groups, to help students with specific issues. If you are an international student from outside the EU/EEA and you have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) you are entitled to full health care from the beginning of your stay in the UK on the same basis as UK residents.

The Students’ Union is an organisation that seeks to enrich your student experience and open doors of opportunity throughout your life at university. It is independent of the University and is run for students by students.
It is also a registered charity and as a Solent student, you’re automatically a member.
We have a great bar, café and shop but also we are here to support you throughout your university experience. We offer advice, support, representation, events, societies, sports clubs, work experience and volunteering opportunities.
Every year in February, we run elections across the whole student body. Any student can run for any position and all students can vote.
Together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, StudyPortals offers you the chance to receive up to £10000 to expand your horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage you to study abroad in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages.
