The University of Marburg is one of the most historic of German universities. It was founded in 1527 during the Reformation by the 23-year-old Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous as the second Protestant university (the oldest Protestant university existed from 1526 to 1530 in Liegnitz in Silesia).
Almost all scientific disciplines, with the exception of the engineering sciences, are represented at Philipps-Universität Marburg. The different disciplines are assigned to different faculties, which are to be found under Faculties.
The Philipps-Universität Marburg is a traditional university with a wide range of scientific disciplines. We are convinced that knowledge acquired through outstanding research in single scientific disciplines is the basis for the interaction and mutual thematical and methodical growth of faculty cultures.
The University of Marburg is headed by a Presidium of the President, three Vice Presidents and the Registrar. In addition to the committees Senate, University Conference and University Council, there are various commissions, advisory councils and committees. The university administration assumes central administrative tasks for students and employees, it is divided into departments and staff units.
Exchange students, IUSP students, and ISP students are able to apply for a room in student housing when completing their application form for study at UMR. We highly recommend this option to students who are eligible, as finding private housing in Marburg can be challenging. We have developed a brochure with information about how to find accommodation with many useful tips and tricks. This brochure is meant especially for the situation in Marburg.
The cooperative two-tiered library system of Philipps-Universität Marburg comprises the university library and about 100 departmental libraries (branch libraries, specialized libraries and institute libraries, etc.). The university library, the history of which stretches back to the founding of the Philipps-Universität Marburg, currently comprises about 1.9 million volumes.
The University Computer Center is the central facility of the University of Information Processing and Communication Technology (ICT). The HRZ provides ICT services to students, staff and partners of the university and operates the university's ICT infrastructure .
In order to master the studies well, the general conditions outside the lectures have to be right. For example, the cafeteria menu is one of the most requested information outside teaching. At the beginning of the study, leisure and cultural initiatives can help to gain a foothold in Marburg. And solid student financing is part of the basis for learning.
