In 2015 three partners: Mario Cucinella Architects, Iris Ceramica Group Foundation and SAIB Spa, launched the SOS School of Sustainability, a post-graduate program based on Mario Cucinella’s Manifesto regarding alternative models of architectural education as an answer to address the decarbonization agenda and environmental issues. In 2021, at its 8th edition SOS becomes a registered Foundation.
SOS School of Sustainability is a professional school that offers educational programs to recent graduates and young professionals seeking to build experience in Sustainable Architecture and Design.
SOS academic offer includes:
- Master’s Program in Sustainable Architecture and Design
- Single courses
Bringing together the know-how and competencies that Mario Cucinella Architects has acquired over more than twenty-five years of professional practice in the global context, SOS represents a nexus for the exchange of knowledge in the fields of construction, education, design, and research that allows students to comprehend sustainability practices through an innovative, visionary, and holistic approach.
SOS serves as an international platform of research and development with its roots grounded in the “design philosophy” of MCA, namely designing with the impact of our actions well set in mind, while never restricting the freedom of thought that allows for disruptive experimentation. This research path is at the basis of the SOS Curriculum that aims at carrying on applied research of materials, processes, and advanced technology, being capable to keep up with changing shape of practice with the awareness of the concept of a livable more than just imagined sustainability. SOS identifies four major areas where to experiment its drivers of change: LIFESTYLE and LIFECYCLE, MOBILITY, NUTRITION, BIG DATA.
SOS School of Sustainability provides the knowledge and skills that students need to succeed in their careers as experts in sustainable design and offers opportunities to establish a strong professional network that will serve as a nexus for accessing quality job opportunities.
Professional practice and mentoring activities are built into the curriculum, including industry and architectural firms' site visits, project study trips, regular client and community meetings, and public presentations to assist SOS students in identifying rewarding professional careers.
Thanks to these activities that facilitate placement, 84% of SOS students are hired by international firms, within two months of graduation.

Lying in the same building as MCA, students can also easily access professionals from the studio for mentoring and counseling.
Projects are developed using the latest digital tools, including BIM, Parametric & Computational Design, generative algorithms, and analysis tools to maximize environmental performance, while responding to the needs of occupants and users. Students are required to bring their personal computer to participate in the classes.
A ledwall room is available for workshops, meetings, and guest lectures.
Founded in 2015 in Bologna, SOS headquarters relocated in Spring 2021 to Via Poma 52 in Milan.
The 1000 sqm structure hosts also MCA Mario Cucinella Architects, in order to allow for the continuation of the crucial collaborations on the research and development of sustainable design between the School and Firm. All floors is connected through wide galleries and a central opening spans all the way up to the dominant skylight, at the center of the rooftop terrace.
The School lies in the Risorgimento neighborhood, on the East side of Milan, the historical and contemporary heart and soul of the city, a symbol of Made in Italy design. This area is conveniently connected to Milan’s efficient public transportation.
SOS School of Sustainability is a non-accredited school for young professionals who want to tap into the vast knowledge of MCA and SOS professional partners on all matters related to sustainability. This approach ensures maximum flexibility in pursuing projects that arise contextually with the work done by MCA, its partners, and the founder’s own insights. The program emulates a 60-credit academic offering bringing together theoretical courses and hands-on practice.
SOS issues a final certificate of successful completion of the Master's Program clearly outlining the work carried out by the student and the skills acquired to become a Consultant in the Field of Sustainable Architecture, Design, and Engineering.
