In 2015 three funding partners: Mario Cucinella Architects, Iris Ceramica Group Foundation and SAIB Spa, launched the first SOS – School of Sustainability Post Graduate Program, based on Mario Cucinella’s Manifesto regarding alternative models of architectural education as an answer to address the decarbonization agenda. At its 8th edition, in 2021, SOS becomes a registered Foundation.
The Master Program is organized in two parts. The first part, Foundation Courses, is designed to provide the students with the knowledge and skills required to address the challenges of the future with an open-minded, holistic, research-driven, human-centered approach targeting sustainable environments. The second part is dedicated to Project Tracks and offers classes, workshops & site visits to allow students to make a much deeper exploration of a key area of research ranging from the design of the next generation of architectural and urban environments to urban regeneration, to the provision of measures and tools for granting to the most fragile and exposed communities safe and healthy living conditions.
SOS serves as an international platform of research and development with its roots grounded in the “design philosophy” of MC A, namely designing with the impact of our actions well set in mind, while never restricting the freedom of thought that allows for disruptive experimentation. This research path is at the basis of the SOS Curriculum that aims at carrying on applied research of materials, processes, and advanced technology, being capable to keep up with changing shape of practice with the awareness of the concept of a livable more than just imagined sustainability. SOS identifies four major areas where to experiment its drivers of change: LIFESTYLE and LIFECYCLE, MOBILITY, NUTRITION, BIG DATA.
SOS - School of Sustainability provides the knowledge and skills that the students need to succeed in their careers as experts in sustainable design practice. Professional practice, and mentoring activities are built into the curriculum, including industry and architectural firms site visits, project study trips and regular client and community meetings, to assist SOS students identifying rewarding professional careers. Thanks to these activities 84% of SOS students are hired by international firms, just two months after the end of the course.
After the completion of their studies at SOS, the worthy students will be endorsed to get six months paid internship in the office of one among the partners of the School.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2021. Universities with a score above 4.0 (out of 5) in any of the 8 award categories, receive Badges of Excellence. Congratulations!Learn more about the Global Student Satisfaction Awards
The SOS campus lies within the Mario Cucinella Architects firm. This gives students access to a vast amount of equipment and didactic material as well as access to MCA professionals for mentoring and counseling. SOS has a dedicated space for classes as well as students’ group and individual work.
Projects are developed using the latest digital tools, including BIM, Parametric and Computational Design, generative algorithms and analysis tools to maximize environmental performance, while responding to the needs of occupants and users. Students are required to bring their personal computer to participate in the group work.
Founded in 2015 in Bologna, SOS headquarter has been relocated to Via Poma 52 in Milan. The 1000 sqm state of the art structure opens its door also to the MC A Mario Cucinella Architects, in order to allow for the continuation of the crucial collaborations on the research and development of sustainable design between School and Firm. The School lies in the Risorgimento neighborhood, on the East side of Milan, just a few minutes’ walk from the Duomo and the lively Porta Romana and Porta Venezia, the historical and contemporary heart and soul of the city, a symbol of Made in Italy design. This area is conveniently connected to Milan’s efficient above and below ground public transportation.
SOS – School of Sustainability is non accredited post-graduate program with a philosophy based on bringing together theory and practice for young professionals who want to tap into the vast knowledge of MCA firms as well as our professional partners on all matters related to sustainable architecture, engineering and design. Our program emulates a 60 credit academic offering bringing together theoretical courses followed by an extensive practice-based exercise through group work on real projects.
