Aalborg University is a young university with only 40 years of history. Since its establishment in 1974, it's already ranking amongst the best and most acknowledged international universities in the world.
The number of students has increased from 3,000 during the first years of the university’s lifespan to the present 18,597. In 1995, AAU began its expansion by opening a department in Esbjerg with the merging of Esbjerg Engineering College; in 2003, Aalborg University opened a department in Copenhagen; and in 2010, the School of Medicine was created.
All degree programmes and research activities at Aalborg University are problem and project-based and have an interdisciplinary focus. Aalborg University employs several international academic staff, thus having an international atmosphere at campus.
PhD education is research training and advanced studies following a Master’s degree. Aalborg University offers PhD education within four different fields under four faculties.

Aalborg University - Esbjerg welcomes international students from all over the world. Approximately 25% students are international both from within and outside the EU.
AAU Esbjerg is located only around 3 kilometres from Esbjerg town centre and transport options between the town centre and campus are great. Thus, you have easy access to the many cultural experiences and spare time activities that Esbjerg has to offer its 6,500 students. Accomodation for students are plenty and cheaper than in most university cities.
