About

History

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) first opened its doors in 2000 thank to a collaboration between the Ritsumeikan Trust, Oita Prefecture and Beppu City. With an entirely new multicultural learning environment consisting of half international students and half Japanese/domestic students, APU’s aim was to provide an international education that lead to the development of global leaders.

Education

APU's aim is to bring together talented individuals to study and live within this unique environment. APU encourages all students to bring and share their own unique thoughts and ideas. In this one of a kind environment, students naturally acquire intercultural communication skills.

Career

Graduate students have access to and support from a worldwide network which consists of international heads of state, ambassadors and industry leaders (Advisory Committee), distinguished researchers from around the world (Academic Advisors) and institutions associated with APU’s faculty members. This network also includes APU alumni who are spread across the world working in an array of fields and industries. Utilizing this network is indispensable for our students’ careers.

Services

Housing services

  • All graduate students are guaranteed a room in one of APU’s student housing facilities, AP House 4 (APU PLAZA OITA), which will help them adapt to their new life in Japan and to concentrate on their studies. All rooms are equipped with basic facilities, including internet access.
  • At AP House 4, experienced students selected as Resident Assistants (RAs) are available to provide help and support to residents. AP House 4 is located off-campus in downtown Beppu and it takes about thirty minutes to campus by bus.

Medical services

Taking care of your health while you are away from home in a new country is very important. Beppu has an abundance of clean drinking water, fresh air, greenery, parks, sports facilities, gyms, and swimming pools, as well as hot springs, health clinics, and medical centers. In addition, as an APU student you will also have several healthcare services available to you on campus.

Student Life

Campus life

  • Studying at APU means you will be residing in Beppu, a mid-sized city in southwest Japan and one of the country’s most visited locations. Your life here will have both excitement, living in a major tourist destination, and tranquility, with beautiful natural surroundings and relaxing hot springs.
  • This area is also very affordable, with lower living costs compared to larger cities such as Tokyo or Osaka. The campus of APU itself will add another unique dimension to your life here thanks to the vibrant global community, convenient on-campus facilities and popular student-led events.

Sports facilities

  • The facilities allow you to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain your physical fitness while pursuing your studies. In our gymnasium, you can enjoy various indoor sports, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and indoor football.
  • Inside the fitness center, there are over ten different types of training machines, including treadmills, bikes, and free weights. Outdoor facilities include five tennis courts, two multipurpose sports fields, and a basketball court. These are available to students upon reservation.

Student clubs

  • The 140+ student-led organizations of APU create countless opportunities for you to test your knowledge in a real-world setting, gain useful skills, make new discoveries, socialize and have fun with friends, and improve your physical fitness.
  • With support from the Student Office, you can take initiative and start a new club for other students to join.
