History
The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava was established on June 9, 1949 by the Slovak National Council. It wasn´t a unique cultural initiative at that time. Around the same time, the Academy of Performing Arts and the Slovak National Gallery were founded, as well as the Bratislava city theatre was transformed into Slovak National Theatre.
Education
The mission of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava is to enhance education in accredited study programmes, strengthen creative and critical thinking, support independent artistic and scientific research and artistic creation, as well as to encourage creative spirit of the human society adhering to humanistic values.
Research
The VŠVU Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the VŠVU CV) was established in 2001, with the original name of the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IUV), as an active innovative tool improving the research environment of the school, with an emphasis on the development of art and science. intensification of the educational process.

Housing services
AFAD does not have its own student dormitory.
Library services
Located at the H18 Main Building, the library has an impressive collection of publications focused on art and its theory in Slovak, Czech, English, German and other languages.
ICT services
AFAD WiFi connection is available at the H18 Main Building (Hviezdoslavovo nám. 18) and the Drotárska Campus. The computers are available at each of the departments, and at the two computer labs, however, you are advised to have your own laptop with you.
Medical services
Foreign students are obliged to have health insurance (public or individual) during their stay in the Slovak Republic in compliance with the provisions of the Act on the Act No. 404/2011 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners further amendments.
