About

History

  • 1952: The College is opened by the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt as a three-year liberal arts college in the Catholic tradition, offering a teacher preparation program for religious women.
  • 1957: The College is opened to lay students, the first four of whom began classes in September.
  • 1974: A concentration in social sciences and the baccalaureate degree nursing program are added. 

Education

The aim of Dominican College is to promote educational excellence, leadership, and service in an environment characterized by respect for the individual and concern for the community and its needs. Founded by the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt, the College is an independent institution of higher learning, Catholic in origin and heritage. In the Dominican tradition, it fosters the active, shared pursuit of truth and embodies an ideal of education rooted in the values of reflective understanding and compassionate involvement.

Student Life

Campus life

At Dominican College we offer three very different Residence Centers: Guzman Hall, Hertel Hall, and Rosary Hall, each with different amenities and room types. As a resident, you’ll be part of a stimulating community where academic programs are supplemented with community interaction and service learning. In the healthy, safe, academically-conducive environment of our Residence Centers you will achieve success and flourish as a scholar and as a human being.

Sports facilities

Dominican College has 14 varsity teams (seven for both men and  women) that play in Division II of the NCAA. In the last five years, Dominican College’s student-athletes have won 10 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championships and 9 tournaments and the teams have represented the College at national and regional NCAA tournaments 13 times. The women’s athletic program has been honored with three consecutive Alfred R. Restaino, Sr. Cups, the award given annually to the institution that performs best across the board in CACC-sponsored sports.

Student clubs

All student organizations of Dominican College operate under the support of the Student Government Association.  Each club has an advisor with the  general responsibility of serving as a resource person.  Activities and student functions are approved through the Student Activities Office and the Director of Student Activities.

Accreditation

In addition, several of the College’s programs hold specialized national accreditation:

  • The Business programs are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).
  • The Baccalaureate and Masters Nursing programs by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • The Occupational Therapy program by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
  • The Physical Therapy program by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
  • The Social Work program by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
