In early 2012, the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents recommended the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University, which was founded in 1873 in Dahlonega, Georgia, and Gainesville State College, which was founded in 1964 in Gainesville, Georgia.


With more than 18,000 students, the University of North Georgia is one of the state's largest public universities. The university offers more than 100 programs of study ranging from certificate and associate degrees to professional doctoral programs.


Positioned in the fastest-growing region of the state, UNG comprises five campuses united by a single mission focused on academic excellence and academic and co-curricular programs that develop students into leaders for a diverse and global society. The University of North Georgia was formed through the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College, two of the top-performing schools in the University System of Georgia, in January 2013.

Student services

The Hoag Student Center opened in Dahlonega in 1970 and was named for Merritt E. Hoag who was president of North Georgia College from 1949 – 1970. The Student Center reopened in January of 2013 following a yearlong renovation project. The Student Center is the community center of the campus for all members of the university family: students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and guests.

Housing services

As a regional multi-campus institution and premier senior military college, UNG is unique in the range of educational pathways it offers students. From associate degrees to graduate-level programs, UNG provides an array of opportunities to help develop students into leaders for a diverse and global society. One of only six federally designated senior military colleges in the nation, the university carries the distinction of The Military College of Georgia and its nationally recognized Army ROTC program attracts students from across the state, region and nation. 

Library services

The Dahlonega Campus library in the Library Technology Center offers study space, computer workstations, librarian assistance, and a selection of books, DVDs and periodicals. The Information Technology Help Desk, Writing Center and DETI are also located in the LTC building.

Medical services

Since 2010, the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at UNG has increased enrollment to ensure that the northeast Georgia region has sufficient primary care providers to care for the influx of new patients expected when all components of the Affordable Care Act are implemented.

University of North Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, master, education specialist, and doctor of physical therapy degrees and pre-baccalaureate, post-baccalaureate, and post-master certificates.

I really enjoyed my time at University of North Georgia. I was a cadet, so my experience was probably very different from someone not in ROTC. The ROTC program can make keeping up with classes, other student organizations, and a social life somewhat difficult, but this school gets constant awards for excellence as a military school.
