About

History

Founded as an independent School of Medicine in 1976, St. George’s University opened its doors to students beginning in January 1977. It has evolved into a top center of international education, drawing students and faculty from 140 countries to the Caribbean island of Grenada, in the West Indies.

Research

St. George’s University provides a well-rounded experience for its students, including by offering a wealth of research opportunities on campus. Our unique location and variety of dual degree programs provide unique research opportunities in areas such as medical public health, anthropology, ecology, marine and terrestrial biology, ethics, and more.  Additionally, One Health One Medicine, the convergence of human, animal, and ecosystem health, is of particular interest on our unique campus which is home to both a medical and veterinary medical school.

Career

The Office of Career Guidance and Student Development (OCGSD) is staffed by faculty and alumni of St. George’s University School of Medicine and designed to assist medical students in obtaining postgraduate residency. Complete information on examination requirements, clinical rotation time schedules, and obtaining postgraduate training is provided to help students navigate the residency application process.

The OCGSD also advises students on USMLE preparation, counsels students in specialty and residency selection, interview skills, CV preparation, and the residency application process in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other non-US programs.

Student services

When students arrive on Grenada, they are transported to a place of serenity, cultural diversity, and warmth. Home, at least for the time being, is the pastel-tinted architecture of the majestic True Blue Campus, a state of-the-art $250 million campus that includes cutting-edge teaching facilities, labs, library, research institute, and more. Their backyard is the breathtaking lapis blue waters and extraordinary reefs of the Caribbean Sea.

Housing services

No matter the size of your travel party or your budget, guests have a variety of lodging options to choose from during their visit. The below accommodations are only some of the choices available to you.There is much to be discovered when exploring the island of Grenada. In addition to traditional Caribbean activities like snorkeling, hiking the rain forest and fishing, there are many must-see attractions on the island of Grenada, including the Grenada National Museum, Fort George, Fort Frederick, Seven Sisters Falls, Grenada Chocolate Company, Rhum Runner, River Antoine Rum Distillery and Annandale Falls.

Library services

In addition to the standard biomedical periodicals and literature, the library subscribes to Consumer Reports, Cosmopolitan, The Economist, ESPN, Foreign Affairs, Fortune, Health, National Geographic, New Yorker, People, Sports Illustrated, Sunday New York Times, Time, and U.S. News and World Report. The library also has a limited collection of novels and other leisure reading material. 

ICT services

Both wired and wireless Internet access is available at select locations on campus for students to use with their personal computers. The wireless network “hot spots” require 802.11a/b/g/n compatible equipment. Additional information is available by following the “Office of Information Technology” link. Internet access is also provided in all SGU computer labs.

Medical services

It is SGU policy that all students maintain adequate health insurance and must confirm existing coverage if they opt to waive out of the SGU sponsored program. All students should view the insurance plan information before making the election to enroll or waive. Students will receive an instructional email with information how to enroll in or waive the plan.

Student Life

Campus life

Students begin their academic studies at the stunning True Blue campus, which rises atop a peninsula in the southwest corner of Grenada and is a beautiful combination of Georgian architecture visually enhanced with vivid Caribbean colors. More than 65 buildings spread across the vibrant seaside location. The campus is always expanding to keep up with the latest technologies and to provide students with the best learning environment. Major construction is currently underway on our new dormitory and fitness/group study center.

Sports facilities

Sports and recreation are an essential part of St. George’s University and campus life. Students take full advantage of the tropical climate, participating in outdoor activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving in their free time. In addition, the Athletics, Sports, and Recreational Department has created a healthy atmosphere for students to exercise their minds and bodies.

Student clubs

St. George’s University student organizations are centered on different areas of student life: cultural, religious, social, academic, professional, and community service. The Office of the Dean of Students, cognizant of the benefits of active student involvement, offers support for over 65 student organizations in Grenada, and for students in clinical rotations. Accreditation

  • Accredited by the Government of Grenada
  • Accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), which is recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK and by the World Federation for Medical Education/Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (WFME/FAIMER). After 2023, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) will issue an ECFMG certification only for degrees obtained from a medical school with an accreditation recognized by the WFME.
