About

History

Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College was New York City's first public coeducational liberal arts college. The school was envisioned as a stepping stone for the sons and daughters of immigrants and working-class people toward a better life through a superb—and at the time, free—college education.

Throughout your education here, you will learn to:

  • think critically and creatively,
  • effectively express your thoughts,
  • make sound ethical judgments,

  • become an informed and responsible citizen of the world.

You will acquire in-depth knowledge within your major area of study complemented by an understanding of a broad range of topics important in our global, 21st-century society.

Services

Student services

  • The Student Center is fully funded by Student Activity Fee money and plays a vital role in the support and academic development of the students.
  • The Office of International Student and Scholar Services assists international students and scholars with visa and immigration processes and compliance, provides referrals to both on- and off-campus resources, and serves as an advocate for international students.
  •  From welcoming the student on campus to congratulating the student at the graduation ceremony, our staff members help support the international student experience at Brooklyn College.

Housing services

Brooklyn College was always meant to be beautiful, right from its beginnings in the 1930s. The original design called for classical, Georgian-style buildings to be constructed on 26 acres, along with a lily pond, gardens, and grassy quadrangles planted with elm trees. The classrooms, lecture halls, art studios, and science laboratories were built to be the best in the country.

Ever since then, Brooklyn College has remained among the most beautiful in the metropolitan area. The lily pond, gardens, and elm trees are still here, and the four original buildings are constantly being refurbished to reflect the expanding needs of our campus community.

Library services

The Brooklyn College Library—the most advanced in the City University of New York system—is the academic, cultural, and technological pulse of the college. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community not only enjoy access to the 1.3 million print materials housed at the library, but also more than 68,000 electronic books and journals.

ICT services

The library provides access to a wireless network and online databases that offer better researched results than typical Internet search engines.

Medical services

The Brooklyn College Health Clinic is a primary care facility where students may receive evaluation and treatment for acute and chronic medical conditions as well as guidance on practices that promote good health and disease prevention. These high-quality confidential health services are offered free of charge to all enrolled Brooklyn College students to help improve well-being and productivity.

Sports facilities

You shouldn't spend all your time in the classroom. In fact, we encourage you to exercise your body as much as your mind. Between classes, go shoot some hoops, swim a few laps, or take a couple of runs around the track. You might consider joining one of our men's and women's intercollegiate teams.

If you'd rather not join a team at all, we invite you to use our recreational facilities in the West Quad Center on your own schedule. From our well-equipped fitness center to our eight-lane swimming pool, you'll find lots of ways to relax and burn off some calories before, between, and after classes.
