The organization that would lead to the founding of SIT, and to the establishment of World Learning, was originally founded in 1932, as The Experiment in International Living. The organization was inspired by Dr. Donald Watt, who had a simple idea — to improve understanding across cultures and nations by sending US students abroad to expand their worldviews.
Students come from all over the world and are at every stage of their careers. We understand that students need degrees that work with their lives and goals. That’s why we offer degrees in different formats.
Whether you need a program that’s part time or full time, in a classroom or online, in one location or in multiple sites around the world, we have the format for you.
SIT students complete their practicums around the world in the fields of sustainable development, international education, TESOL, conflict transformation, and climate change and global sustainability, among many other areas. Through the social, academic, and professional connections this global network provides, SIT students have an easy and dynamic way to connect with like-minded individuals and learn about potential employers worldwide.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2019. By rating institutions on a scale from 1 to 5, on multiple studies-related questions, we found the top educators in the world.Learn more about the Global Student Satisfaction Awards

Because each residence hall is unique in design, room sizes vary greatly. Most dormitories are co-ed, but a few maybe all female and one can be gender neutral. It is up to you to state on your contract if you have special requests.
All dormitories are furnished with shared bath facilities with separate male and female bathrooms. For gender-neutral housing, bathroom will be labeled unisex or gender neutral. The Housing Office makes all room assignments. For all female dormitories: Please be aware that with the approval of the dormitory, residents of female only dormitories may host a male overnight guest.
The Donald B. Watt Library & Information Commons provides a collection of materials relevant to SIT Graduate Institute’s and SIT Study Abroad’s curricula.
Non-electronic items will be mailed to off-campus students and faculty upon request. Resources not held in our print or electronic collection may be available through our interlibrary loan service.
SIT Graduate Institute places the highest priority on the health, safety, and security of all our students. We aim to help all students achieve their academic potential by providing a supportive, diverse, and community-focused learning environment.
Residing on the SIT Graduate Institute campus provides a true living-learning environment that allows students to extend their academic learning. Personal growth, intellectual development, and appreciation of other cultures are just a few of the benefits afforded students who choose to become part of the SIT residential community.SIT provides a range of living arrangements for its students. Residence halls vary in design from small two-story structures for approximately 12 students to a contemporary multipurpose building for 40 students, including the cafeteria.
World Learning’s academic programs offered through SIT (founded as the School for International Training) are accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.).
