FAMU was founded as the State Normal College for Colored Students, and on October 3, 1887, it began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. Today, FAMU, as it has become affectionately known, is the premiere school among historically black colleges and universities.


The most popular undergraduate programs are business administration, biology, criminal justice, and allied health. Other majors are available in every field, from animal science to engineering and nursing. Additionally, the school offers several distinctive degree programs. These include such majors as jazz studies, cardiopulmonary sciences, journalism and health informatics and management.


Florida A&M University is committed to inspirational teaching and exemplary research through creative partnerships at the local, state, national and global levels. The Division of Research seeks to:

  • support the economic development agenda of the state and region;
  • offer superior support services to faculty, staff and students to pursue their research endeavors;

Arnita Tucker Mcfarland is FAMUs Career Development Advisor . Her main goal is to give students information and support in developing a career pathway. Her and her team assit students in choosing a major they are interested and skilled in which avoids major changes and uncertainty.

You are about to begin one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of your lifetime. During your first year of college, you will be in a new environment composed of new people, decisions, and responsibilities. University Housing can help you through this transition as well as better enable you to take full advantage of all the enrichments the University has to offer.

Library services

The program's centerpiece is a rigorously tested Web-based survey bundled with training that helps libraries assess and improve library services, change organizational culture, and market the library. The goals are:

  • Foster a culture of excellence in providing library service
  • Collect and interpret library user feedback systematically over time
  • Identify best practices in library service

ICT services

Smart Classrooms - IT partnered with the Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) to provide a technologically enhanced and virtual learning experience through state-of-the-art smartclassrooms. Over thirty three classrooms are equipped with smart boards. All classrooms on campus are scheduled to have smart in the near future.

Medical services

Students currently enrolled for classes are charged a student health fee along with their tuition. This health fee entitles students to access clinic and mental health services. Students not enrolled for a Summer term or recent graduates may pay a health fee that will allow them access to clinic services for one semester. Only currently enrolled students may utilize the clinic pharmacy.

We believe that our services are supportive of the academic mission of FAMU. Through synergy and collaboration with on and off campus professionals or sponsors, the Student Life areas and departments are contributing to the retention of our students in our own unique way. Consequently, by providing various Student Life services, activities and events, we are assisting in the “life” development of well-rounded students who are prepared to fully matriculate at the FAMU and to eventually compete and excel in a global community upon graduation.

Sports facilities

  • Aerobic Dance - Aerobic Dance combines aerobic training with various dance styles!
  • Boot Camp - Derived from military physical fitness programs, this total body work out is sure to challenge those of every fitness level through a wide variety of body weight and light to moderate weight resistance & isometric exercises.
  • Caribbean Dancehall - Experience and share Afro-Caribbean culture through dance. This class includes a repertoire of choreographies and is filled with unique rhythms & movements.
  • Hard-CORE - This class is especially designed to target, strengthen, and improve your core.
  • Kripalu Yoga - emphasizes meditation, breath work, and encourages inward focus & spiritual attunement.

Student clubs

  • Membership in Greek Life organizations to membership in one or more of the available one hundred and thirty (130) or more clubs and organizations.
