Minjiang University

Minjiang University, established in 2002 with the formal approval of the State Ministry of Education, is a state-run full-time multidisciplinary university. It is a merger of the former Fuzhou Teachers College (founded in 1958) and former Minjiang Vocational College (founded in 1984). Located in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province, MJU is under an education system of dual leadership by the province and the city (Fuzhou), with the city providing the principal leadership. MJU enrolls students from all over the country. At present, the university has over 18,000 full-time students, 13, 600 of which are undergraduates.

About

MJU has developed a balanced multidisciplinary student training system. There are 16 departments in MJU: Chinese Language, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Physics and Electronic Information Engineering, Automobiles, Computer Science, Tourism, Management, Garment Design and Engineering, Art, Geography, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, History, Law, Public Economics and Finance, and Music. In addition, MJU has set up College of Adult Education, IEN-Start Institute, Software College, Strait College and Fuzhou garment College. The university offers 37 majors for undergraduate students and 38 majors for students of professional training school, ranging from liberal arts to science, engineering, management, economics, history and law.

Teaching-oriented, MJU forms a multi-leveled student system with university education as the main part and a coordinated development of advanced vocational education, adult education and further education, which has shown constant improvement in the training quality of applied talents. The university has one national accelerated course, 4 provincial accelerated courses, 5 provincial key disciplines, 7 university key disciplines, 2 provincial teaching groups, one provincial talent-training innovation lab, 2 provincial teaching demonstration centers and 6 prizes of provincial level for teaching achievement. The university has set up more than 25 bases for teaching practice and almost 100 practice and training bases. Since 2002, the employment rate of MJU graduate students has been over 90%.

MJU is made up of almost 1000 faculties members, mostly young and middle-aged. Among the full-time teachers, nearly 40% enjoy senior professional titles, 50% have master or doctor degrees. The faculty includes three experts awarded special State Council allowance, one candidate listed in the Trans-century Talent Training Program by the Ministry of Education, one as a member of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Garment Design and Engineering of Ministry of Education, one distinguished professor in Minjiang Scholar Project, two candidates for the Provincial "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talent Project", five winners of the title of Distinguished Teachers in Fujian's higher education sector, four distinguished professors listed in Mindu Scholar Project, seven leading scholars in disciplines of MJU, and four professors invited by other universities as tutors of Ph.D. cadidates. Ten academicians, including Lin Qun, Chen Jiansheng, Hou Jianguo, Chen Huowang and Chen Mufa, as well as a Korean professor on clothing science have been invited to be visiting professors of MJU.

MJU is actively inviting diverse quality educational resources to enrich its operational modes. MJU has developed various cooperative ventures and exchanges with the University of Tasmania in Australia, Brock University in Canada, Mount Holyoke College in the USA, Technical University of Koszalin in Poland, Beijing University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Taiwan Chung Hua University, and Taiwan Chinese Culture University.

MJU has been honored as one of Fujian's most progressive tertiary institutions and a model university for the Communist Party and for students' political education. Among all Fujian's universities, MJU has also been selected by the Organization Department of CPC Fujian Committee as the only place for the development of new Party members. It has produced many outstanding students such as Wu Libin, one of the 2007 Touch Fujian Top 10 Elites.

MJU also contains scientific research institutions like the Fuzhou Local Custom and Culture Research Institute, the Fuzhou Textile and Apparel Technology Innovation Center, the Computer & Control Technology Research Institute, Institute of Textile & Clothing, the Art Design Research Institute, the Lacquer Art Research Institute, the Chinese Painting Research Institute, and the Geographic Information Research Institute. Since 2002, MJU has been undertaking five nationally funded "863 Project" programs, one national social study project, seven national science fund projects, 113 authorized scientific and research projects of provincial (ministry) level, and has won more than 50 scientific and research achievement awards issued by the provincial and municipal governments and above, more than 10 authorized patents, and has published more than 120 scholarly works and over 3500 theses, more than 70 of which have been included in the three big retrieval systems such as SCI.

Services

MJU has an excellent infrastructure. The campus occupies an area of about 166 hectares and the floor space of the school buildings is 457,000 square meters. The school library holds more than 1,800,000 volumes. Situated in the University Town of Fuzhou, at the foot of the Qi Mountain and by the Minjiang River, the main campus is set in a beautiful natural scenery.
