Founded in 1419, the University of Rostock is the oldest in the Baltic Sea Region. True to the motto “Traditio et Innovatio”, the University of Rostock has constantly further developed. The multitude of new buildings represents the university’s modernity.
Thus, the university has nine faculties these days, comprising of numerous institutes and clinics. In addition, the Interdisciplinary Faculty as central university institution unites researchers and students from all disciplines. Research focuses which have developed out of the university tradition are merged here. Furthermore, this institution sharpens the profile by joining strengths in an interdisciplinary communication and cooperation.
The University of Rostock has undergone substantial content and organizational changes as a full university through interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary profiling in recent years, and is facing the future societal challenges in an innovative and competitive manner. The University of Rostock is equipped with latest and advanced facilities. This program is highly practical and in accordance with the market trends. The program courses are properly designed to address the knowledge, practical skills and aided with softwares / simulations on Industry based projects and tools.
I am an international PhD student at the University of Rostock and joined LIKAT in September last year. My experience so far has been positive overall. The university offers a good research environment, especially for students interested in chemistry and catalysis research. At LIKAT, I had the opportunity to work with modern equipment and interact with researchers from different backgrounds, which helped me develop both scientifically and personally. Rostock is also a calm and beautiful city, especially for students who prefer a quieter environment compared to larger German cities. The cost of living is relatively manageable, and the Baltic Sea atmosphere makes the city unique. As a foreign student, adapting at the beginning was sometimes challenging, especially with bureaucracy and language barriers, but the university community and colleagues were generally supportive. I also appreciated the international environment in the research institutes . Overall, I think the University of Rostock is a good place for motivated students who are interested in research and academic development in Germany.
I studied Chemistry at the University of Rostock and overall, I had a valuable academic experience. The programme helped me deepen my knowledge in organic chemistry, catalysis and laboratory work. I especially appreciated the research-oriented environment and the opportunity to work independently on scientific projects. As an international student in a German-taught programme, social integration was sometimes challenging. Since the programme was not international, I often felt rather alone and it was not always easy to connect with classmates. This made the experience emotionally difficult at times. However, I really appreciated the support and understanding of the professors. They were aware that studying in German can be challenging for international students. In many cases, it was possible to take exams in English, and students could ask questions whenever something was unclear. This made the academic environment more accessible and supportive. Despite the challenges, I learned a lot both academically and personally. The programme helped me become more independent, resilient and confident in a German academic environment. Overall, I would recommend the University of Rostock to motivated students who are ready for a demanding scientific education.

Compared with other cities in Germany, the rents in Rostock are affordable, even in the inner city and in particular in the popular student’s district Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt („KTV“). Whether you prefer a student dormitory or look for the conventional flat share.
The Campus Library Südstadt was established in 2004. It houses the subject areas Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Medicine/ Life Sciences, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Economics, Social Sciences, Law, Political Sciences, Teacher Education and Sports.
The Campus specialists are contact persons mainly for prospective students but also for students at the University of Rostock. They are regularly trained by the Student Service Center staff and are able to answer many questions on the subject of study. The campus specialists represent the University of Rostock at trade fairs or at school events for study orientation and attend groups of students who visit the University of Rostock.
The university sport offers for students and staff ranges from leisure sport to competitive sport, for everyone who seeks physical or mental compensation for study or everyday working routine.
Since, 1974, Rostock’s nightlife cannot be imagined without it: the LT-Club. Generations of students have celebrated here, regularly from Thursday to Saturday. While Fridays are dedicated to a certain motto, things get really speedy across all musical sectors in the old NDR television broadcasting building, restored in 2003, on Thursdays and Saturdays. Every taste will find its suitable music corner here. Who wants to go out at Saturday night in Rostock goes to the LT-Club! By the way - students pay less entrance! The drink prices are student-friendly too and the large outdoor area is an invitation to relax and supplies hungry guests with tasty food from the barbecue.
