About

History

Since that first class graduated in 1883, the university has become a vibrant centre of learning. Through 12 faculties and three affiliated university colleges, Western today offers its 36,000-plus students more than 400 specializations, majors and minors.

Education

Western, a leader in business education since its founding, has continued to lead at home and abroad thanks to construction of a state-of-the-art Richard Ivey School of Business in 2012 and the opening of North America’s first business school campus in Hong Kong in 1998.Western, a medical advancement leader since its founding, has continued to push innovation most recently when an HIV vaccine developed by Dr. Chil-Yong Kang received approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration to start human clinical trials, a first of its kind, in 2012.

Services

Student services

Student Central offers a wide variety of services for current students, future students, alumni, staff, and faculty. Services are offered in person, by telephone, by e-mail, or online.  Student Central services include:

  • Providing information on undergraduate admissions and recruitment, student records, course registration, OSAP, forms of financial assistance, scholarships, tuition and other fees, exams, and graduation;
  • Processing tuition fee payments;
  • Distributing government loans and other forms of financial aid;
  • Assisting with course registration;
  • Producing transcripts and official Western letters;
  • Completing various third-party forms;
  • Producing Western ONEcards (photo ID cards).

Housing services

Western Residences offer more than just a place to eat and sleep. Residence life engages and connects you to the University community and fosters your growth as a leader. There are ample opportunities for leadership and involvement in a range of activities.

Residence Amenities:

  • Workout rooms, private music practice rooms and laundry facilities
  • In-building dining halls with a varied six-week menu cycle
  • Main lounges for residence events equipped with pingpong and pool tables, couches and large screen TVs
  • Access to 24-hour Front Desk service
  • Regular caretaking from our Facilities Management staff

Library services

Western is pleased to provide UWOFA Librarians and Archivists with an extensive range of benefits.

ICT services

The Instructional Technology Resource Centre supports faculty members who wish to integrate technology into their courses. Approved projects are assigned to student consultants who will work directly with faculty members to develop their ideas into e-learning tools. The ITRC has a diverse collection of software and hardware that can be used throughout the development process.

Medical services

A Health Care Spending Account (HCSA) is provided for reimbursement of medical expenses. Medical Expenses as defined by Income Tax Regulations are eligible for reimbursement including premiums for other insurance programs, dental expenses, vision care expenses, drugs, hospital, supplies and many other items.

Student Life

Campus life

Western’s current policy bans smoking in university buildings, as well as within 10 metres of building entrances, loading docks and fresh air intakes. Building entrances, especially those outside Weldon and WSSB, have historically been the biggest point of contention between smokers and nonsmokers.

Sports facilities

Western has a wide variety of clubs and associations to belong to. Whether you want to join over 9,500 other students in one of 180 different clubs on campus, or if you're staff or faculty at Western, there is a way for everyone to feel connected.

The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at Western Unversity has Educational Accreditation with the Canadian Institute of Actuaries; is recognized as a Centre of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries; and has Educational Accreditation with the Statistical Society of Canada
