The European University Institute (EUI) is an international postgraduate teaching and research institute. It was originally set up in 1972 by the six founding Member States of the European Communities to provide advanced academic training for doctoral researchers and to promote research in economics, history and civilization, law and the political and social sciences.

History
The EUI was born out of an atmosphere of cooperation, with notable advocacy for a European institute at the Hague Conference in 1948 and the European Cultural Conference the following year.
Other priorities persisted however until the 1955 Messina Conference; a series of constructive talks responding to the widening of Europe.Education
A subsequent agreement in 1984 between the European Commission and the European University Institute (EUI) laid the groundwork for establishing the Archives in Florence, and the HAEU opened its doors to researchers and the public in 1986.
Research
The European Union is the world’s most developed form of transnational governance. However, the EU model experiences times of unparalleled challenge, deep tensions prevail and it is timely to reconsider some of the complex and pressing questions that arise on economic, legal, political and social integration and the way in which these interact.

Student services
The EUI Counselling Service offers you a professional, secure and friendly space where you can talk about whatever is worrying you, with total respect for your values, choices and lifestyle.
The Service is open to researchers, fellows, partners and staff, and is free of charge.
Counselling sessions take place in the Badia, in the rooms BF 310 and BF 311 (taking the stairs in front of the Office of the President).
Housing services
The European University Institute is seated on the Tuscan hillside overlooking Florence and close to Fiesole.
Many of the villas date from the Renaissance period and have been restored along with their landscaped gardens. Where available information has been provided on the history of each estate, which can be found by clicking on the villa images below. Newly-built residencies for researchers are a welcome addition to the EUI campus.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Service mission is to provide the Information Technology (IT) resources for the work and activities of the EUI. It is committed to delivering quality customer services and technical solutions in the academic and administrative environment of the EUI community.
