About

History

Based on the 1975 Austrian University Organisation Act, the University of Mining has been known as Montanuniversität Leoben since 1 October 1975. Having crossed the 1000-student threshold in 1981, student numbers for 2012/13 reached approx. 3,300 – the highest since the university was founded. Montanuniversität has offered only Bachelors and Masters programmes since 2011/12.

Education

The study programmes offered at Montanuniversität are based along the value-added chain, from raw materials and production materials, on to the finished product. The range of studies is complimented by multidisciplinary fields such as Industrial Energy­ Technology and Industrial Logistics. The first year of studies, as an introductory phase, is the same for all students. As a result, students can switch study programmes seamlessly at the end of the first year without losing any time.

Research

Montanuniversität Leoben is uniquely linked in research clusters with business and scientific partners across Austria.

The Christian Doppler Research Association (CDG) promotes cooperation between science and business. Specifically, this takes place in specially established research units with fixed terms, in which application-orientated basic research is pursued.

The following CD laboratories are currently set up at Montanuniversität Leoben:

  • Christian Doppler Laboratory for Advanced Synthesis of Novel Multifunctional Coatings
  • Christian Doppler Laboratory for Extractive Metallurgy of Technological Metals
  • Christian Doppler Laboratory for high efficient composite processing

Career

Montanuniversität is traditionally closely associated with industry and economics. With a large number of projects in cooperation with various companies, students are integrated very early into a network that will later provide them with a head start into the professional world. Thanks to the strong application-orientated style of instruction, students are always kept abreast of the latest developments and rapidly find themselves at home in their vocations.

Student services

The Montanuniversitaet International Relations Office – in short MIRO – is a service facility, which supports Montanuniversitaet in its international processes.

MIRO‘s major concern is to assist students, as well as academic and administrative staff to coordinate temporary outgoing and incoming mobilities.

The library of Montanuniversitaet is a public library. Public services and borrowing are free of charge.

Medical services

As with every trip abroad, in the case of studying and research in Austria, too, it is important to have a sufficient health insurance that is valid in Austria. People who need a visa or permit for entry to Austria already have to produce proof of health insurance when applying for the visa or permit.

Campus life

There are lots of things to do when you are studying at Montanuniversität. Away from the university and research departments, the city of Leoben has a lively social scene and an amazing range of health and fitness facilities, shops and culture.

Sports facilities

As a balance to academic life, the USI Leoben offers a wide range of sports courses and training for small membership fees. For first-year students, it is a great way to try out new sports and meet fellow students at the same time.

Student clubs

Besides classes and academic life at the university, Leoben features active and flourishing student societies. Students can get involved in study-related, cultural, political or sports clubs and thereby make new contacts and pursue their interests.

Good studies beautiful university and full of student life. The dorms are really good and there is also free bike service. The landscape is very beautiful and you have good connections to Wien and Graz. The city is very little but enough to do activities such as cinema , bowling, restaurants and partys. It is not a good place if you want to go out everyday because there is...

Teaching methods was mostly good but ofcourse naturally some professors did not helped us about language. even the course was English , they proceeded it in German.
