About

The Counselor Education program at Southern Illinois University is developmental and holistic in focus, taking a wellness approach to counseling and psychological wellbeing.

Overview

Key Features

We are an energetic and excited group of students and faculty engaging in the life-long process of professional development through research, teaching, clinical supervision, clinical work, and service. At the Master's level, we are committed to preparing ethical and culturally competent professional counselors to provide high quality individual, group, and family counseling for adults, adolescents, and children in a variety of settings including but not limited to child and adolescent community mental health programs, college career services and community mental health agencies.

Students of the Counselor Education program at Southern Illinois University are encouraged to reflect upon their own values, beliefs, and self-concept as they learn multiple counseling skills and techniques and develop a professional identity as a counselor. In accordance with the ethical guidelines and standards of practice integral to the profession of counseling, students are also expected to adhere to the tenets of nondiscriminatory practice with regard to clients from various backgrounds. Students will be encouraged and supported in their use of a multicultural perspective and are expected to develop an ability to work with clients who vary in race, gender, level of physical or mental ability, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, country of origin, level of education, and/or sexual orientation.
