
Overview
The online Nursing program offered by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas , uses a variety of teaching strategies designed to actively engage students. Two-day orientation sessions are held on campus before the beginning of each fall semester to enhance the connections among students and with the nursing faculty.
The family nurse practitioner track prepares graduates to:
- Work as a nurse practitioner in a variety of settings.
- Collect health histories and perform physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic diseases.
- Prescribe medication and treatments.
- Refer to specialists as necessary.
- Provide patient and family counseling, and education regarding lifestyle behaviors.
- Participate in research projects and integrate research findings.
Learning Objectives
- Evaluate the principles, personal values, and beliefs that influence ethical decision making, which provides a framework for nursing practice.
- Communicate effectively as a health care professional creating collaborative interdependent relationships and acting as advocates for the nursing profession and client population.
- Incorporate nursing theory and evidence-based practice in advanced nursing roles.
- Understand the influences of human diversity and social issues to provide culturally sensitive health promotion and disease prevention strategies.
- Assume a leadership role in the management of human, fiscal, and physical health care resources to improve nursing practice and health care delivery.
- Competently assess, diagnose, prescribe, evaluate, and create holistic plans of treatment.
- Articulate the professional role, which includes the ethical code of conduct and scope of advanced practice.
- Develop and monitor comprehensive, holistic plans of care that address the health promotion and disease prevention needs of diverse client populations.
- Assess and monitor teaching/learning needs in a diverse client population.

- Transcripts – All applicants are required to submit a transcript from each postsecondary institution attended, showing all degrees and coursework, the dates awarded, and grades received.
