Programme overview
The Master's specialisation in Water and Environment focuses on environmental issues on different scales, and works to understand the stressors of ecosystems as a starting point.
You will be trained in analysing the impact of humans on ecosystem and health, and learn how to quantitatively assess and manage issue like climate change, pollution and land use.
Together, the specialisations within the Master’s in Biology cover the whole range from organism to ecosystem and environment, which means you can create the programme that fits your interests.
This specialisation is connected to the Institute for Water and Wetland Research (IWWR), a leading institute in research to wetland ecosystems and stress biology.

Career prospects
After graduation, about one third of our students quickly take up a position as researcher and one third starts working at a policy officer at a governmental organisation or an NGO. The rest of the students usually choose for a position in industry, for example, as a risk analyser of toxic substances. In general, our graduates end up as a:
- Researcher at a university or research institute
- Researcher in a company, either a large or a start-up company
- Researcher at a governmental research institute
- Consultant at a governmental agency, like a ministry
- Consultant at a consulting firm
- Risk analyser
- Policy officer at a governmental organisation or an NGO

General requirements
- A completed Bachelor's degree
Entering the Master’s specialisation in Water and Environment requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences or a related field of science.An international degree has to be equivalent to a Dutch university diploma. The Admission Office will determine if an international student has the required knowledge to be admitted, and if the student is required to follow specific courses from the Bachelor's programme to eliminate possible deficiencies.
Students must have passed (preliminary) examinations containing the following subject matter:
- Ecology 12 EC
- Water Quality 6 EC
- Statistics/ Modelling 6 EC
- Geographic Info Systems 6 EC
- Climate change 6 EC
- A proficiency in English

Funding
We have a number of scholarships available only for international Master’s students. You can find the full list, including details about eligibility requirements and how to apply, on the university's website
- Please do note, that most of these scholarships are not fully funded. The Radboud Scholarship Programme (RSP) is the only scholarship that offers both fully and partially funded scholarships.
