Would you like to create new knowledge rather than just study it? The Research Master’s in Communication Science from University of Amsterdam is a two-year MSc degree programme for students who would like to be at the forefront of the newest developments in understanding the role of communication and media in society. 


The increasing pervasiveness of media and communication in our lives, forms many fascinating challenges. Older notions of media and communication need to be reassessed, the new media environment needs to be charted, and the consequences of the rapid changes in new media and digital technologies need to be understood. This forms the core of the Research Master’s programme in Communication Science.

The Research Master’s programme provides an excellent preparation for a PhD in communication science, or a related field, at the UvA or any other (international) university. The programme provides a solid background for research positions at media corporations and production companies, marketing and advertising agencies, governmental organisations and consultancy businesses.

GMAT admission requirements GMAT The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

English requirements

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.
