Objectives of School Counseling Specialization from Cleveland State University (CSU)
Education of counseling students
- To educate and prepare School Counseling students who meet all Ohio standards for licensure as School Counselors.
- To provide training across the 8 common core areas as identified by CACREP. These are: Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice, Social and Cultural Diversity, Human Growth & Development, Career Development, Counseling and Helping Relationships, Group Counseling and Group Work, Assessment and Testing, Research and Program Evaluation
Advancement of program excellence
- Promote professional counselor identity with students through involvement in professional counseling organizations.
- That our faculty contribute to the field of Counselor Education at the national level through publications, presentations, and membership in professional counseling organizations and service.
- To maintain our CACREP accreditation for our School Counseling program.
Community Service
- To provide service to the greater Cleveland area through Continuing Education workshops, pro bono presentations, and consultation.
- Provide service to the profession.

General requirements
- Completed application with a $40 non-refundable application fee. Application fees cannot be waived or deferred.
- Transcripts of academic work and degree certificates from each college/university attended. All school records should be submitted in the original language and should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
- Proof of having met at least one of the English language proficiency requirements. CSU offers students the following choices to prove English language proficiency
- Successful completion of CSU's IELP (Intensive English Language Program) Advanced Level, with a grade of 80% or better
- Graduated from a secondary school or accredited college/university in the US or from one of the TOEFL exempted countries.
- Official score report of the GRE, GMAT, or MAT if required by your department. The academic program has the option of requiring additional test requirements from applicants.
