Overview

Groundwater is vital to the sustainability of society, especially in Australia. Hydrogeology deals with the distribution and flow of groundwater beneath Earth's surface and the interaction of groundwater with the atmosphere, biosphere and Earth's crust via chemical, physical and biological processes in groundwater systems.

This Master of Hydrogeology program from The University of Western Australia will develop your understanding of these complex and dynamic processes and the impacts of human activity and environmental change on groundwater systems. Topics such as groundwater flow systems, aquifer characterisation, contamination and remediation, numerical modelling and groundwater management are covered in the course and there is an opportunity to undertake a research project.

Career Pathways

Employment opportunities include the resources industries (minerals, hydrocarbons, and construction) but also exist in government agencies dealing with resources or environmental companies and agencies.

Many graduates continue to develop their specialist skills in industry or government agencies around the world, while others join academic institutions. Active research areas include reactive transport modelling, surface water groundwater interaction, hydrogeological impacts of waste water, arid zone hydrology, geothermal hydrogeology and groundwater dependence of ecosystems to name but a few.
