Faculty and students in this program address the complex problem of how to achieve deep understanding, high performance, and equity in American education. While the United States has many excellent schools and universities, too many of them are failing their students. We are working toward solutions that result in school improvement and reform at the site, district, state, and national levels.

This master’s degree program combines discipline-based scholarship with the methodological tools to address difficult questions in novel ways. The focus is on Organizing School Reform - Leadership and Analytic Skills. Students examine the ideological and empirical underpinnings of contemporary reform issues – from charter schools, to community organizing for change, to the steady work required to enrich schools within districts.

The master’s degree program prepares graduates for careers in education research, public policy, advocacy, and organizational management. Graduates go on to careers such as policy analyst, research associate, academic specialist, and education coach.

Programme Structure

  • Required coursework includes an orientation to the Policy and Organization Research program's theoretical approach and thematic areas. A course in research design and a year-long POME seminar help students develop ideas and questions for research topics related to their interests and backgrounds.
  • An introductory course in Program Evaluation presents the issues and models that concern evaluators, researchers, and program managers. Students can also choose elective courses that address political, historical, and economic perspectives. On completion of 24 units of coursework, students take a two-part Comprehensive Examination that consists of an extended seminar paper and an oral exam on a topic in their area of specialization.
