The graduate degree Earth Sciences program in The Ohio State University provides students the opportunity to develop advanced professional training in the Earth and Environmental Sciences and Geodetic Science.


Program objectives

As a student in the Earth Sciences program in The Ohio State University, you will:

  • Investigate the history of our planet, its material structure and resources, and the processes that have driven its evolution and continue to shape our environments.
  • Study the Earth’s interior and surface, its oceans, freshwaters and glaciers, its atmosphere and outer space, and their interactions with each other and with the biosphere.
  • Learn responsible use of natural resources, issues of sustainability, and the mitigation of natural and manmade hazards and global change.
  • Read Earth’s recent and ancient history in its rocks, fossils, landscapes and gravity.
  • Probe and characterize the Earth system using satellites, in situ and laboratory measurements, physical theories, and numerical models. 
  • Have access to several laboratory facilities, data archives and a variety of instrumental equipment.
  • Conduct field work worldwide and independent research on fundamental issues in the Earth and Environmental Sciences.
  • Create and disseminate knowledge about our planet, develop new techniques to explore and understand it, and share this knowledge and our technical skills with colleagues, students, and society. 

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Qualified M.S. students, who are offered support when first accepted into the M.S. program, are conditionally assured support for four academic-year semesters (not including summer support). 
  • Support is conditional on maintaining reasonable progress, on maintaining good standing in the Graduate School (GSH Sec. 5.1), and satisfactory performance of GTA or GRA duties. Support is also conditional on availability of funds.

General requirements

  • A baccalaureate or professional degree (or equivalent foreign credential) from an accredited college or university, earned by the expected date of entry into your graduate program.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for the last degree earned.
  • Prerequisite training that will enable you to pursue your program. Evidence usually comes in the form of transcripts or other credentials documenting that you have completed prerequisite academic work. 
  • Standardized test score (GRE or GMAT) if the score is required by your program. Scores must be sent electronically from the testing agency; faxed or emailed scores are not considered. Note: Scores are valid for five years after your test date.
