In the Computer Science - Computational Linguistics Master’s program at Charles University, students are given a broad overview of their field, helping them to think independently, to distinguish between important and marginal problems, and to accommodate quickly to novel technologies. Studies usually take two years and finish with a state final exam and Master’s thesis defense. After successful completion the student is awarded the title of a Master of Science.

The aim of the study branch Computational Linguistics is to get the students ready for research in the area of natural language processing and development of applications dealing with both written and spoken language. Examples of such applications are systems of information retrieval, machine translation, grammar checking, text summarization and information extraction, automatic speech recognition, voice control, spoken dialogue systems, and speech synthesis. The emphasis is put on deep understanding of formal foundations and their practical applicability. The study branch Computational Linguistics can be studied in two specializations: (i) computational and formal linguistics, and (ii) statistical methods and machine learning in computational linguistics.

The graduate is familiar with the theoretical foundations of the formal description of natural languages, the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of automatic natural language processing, and state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. Graduates have the ability to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in the design and development of systems automatically processing natural language and large quantities of both structured and unstructured data, such as information retrieval, question answering, summarization and information extraction, machine translation and speech processing. They are equipped with reasonable knowledge, skills, and experience in software development and teamwork applicable in all areas involving the development of applications aiding human-computer interaction and/or machine learning.

Programme Structure

The study program is very flexible and students can customize their set of attended courses based on their particular interests and needs. In the first year, there are mandatory foundational courses such as data structures and theory of complexity and computability. Students of Computational Linguistics also have courses on natural language processing and statistical methods and they begin work on a group software project, while students of Discrete Models and Algorithms have courses on combinatorics, graph theory, and optimization. Some courses on specific subjects, as described next, are also included in the first year.

The second year of studies is organized according to the student’s own selection of courses. This is based on the choice of study plan within the study branch. We offer courses on artificial intelligence and its sub-areas such as machine learning, planning, declarative programming, and neural networks, several linguistics courses, courses on speech recognition and machine translation, and courses on optimization techniques (non-linear, combinatorial, multi-criteria), integer programming, mathematical structures, algorithms and their complexity, and approximation and probabilistic algorithms. Students may attend some of these courses already in their first year, so that in their second year they can focus on finishing their master’s thesis.

    C1 Advanced is a Cambridge English Qualification. It reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210. You will receive a separate score for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and for Use of English. These five scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam. Universities and colleges may ask you to achieve a specific score, either overall or for a particular skill.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

Academic Requirements

To apply for a Master’s program delivered in English you must

  • hold or be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s diploma and provide a certified copy thereof; in cases required by law, a certification of equivalence of education must accompany the application,
  • have sufficient academic background in the relevant fields (see below for details); this can be demonstrated by passing the specialized entrance examination in June 2016 in Prague that is organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, or by providing transcripts (academic records) of your previous education accompanied by syllabi of the completed courses; promising students who do not have this background may be admitted with the provision that they complete the missing Bachelor’s courses,
  • have sufficient command of the English language; this can be demonstrated by providing your results in one of the standardized English tests that we recognize (see below for details).

You are also welcome to accompany your application by

  • a statement of purpose in which you describe your reasons for applying to the proposed programme, your study and possibly also research interests and future career plans,
  • letters of recommendation as recent as possible from professors and employers who can comment on your recent professional accomplishments and your qualifications for pursuing a Master’s degree in mathematics or computer science.
Academic background

In this paragraph we summarize the minimum knowledge required for applicants in the various study programmes and study branches offered at our faculty.

Master of Computer Science

Study branches Theoretical Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Discrete Models and Algorithms, Computer Graphics and Game Development, Software and Data Engineering, Software Systems, Artificial Intelligence: background in calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability, computer programming, algorithms and data structures, computer organization, and the theory of automata and formal grammers.

Entrance examination

Applicants who will not sufficiently demonstrate the necessary background listed above by May 9, 2016, or with their application, will be invited to take the entrance examination in Prague. The entrance examination for a Master’s programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University consists of four problems, each worth 25 points. In case of an incomplete solution a proportional number of points will be given. The maximum total score is 100. The minimum score for admission is 40 points out of 100. Depending on the study programme and study branch, the examination has the following structure:

Computational Linguistics Scholarship 2016

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague, grants one scholarship to a highly qualified applicantin the Master’s Programme in Computer Science, study branch Computational Linguistics (language of instruction: English).


1. The Scholarship will be known as the Computational Linguistics Scholarship (CLS).

2. The Scholarship includes direct coverage of tuition fees (3000 EUR per academic year for students from the EU, and 5000 EUR per academic year for students outside the EU), and acontribution to living expenses of 4000 EUR per academic year, plus acontribution to travel expensesup to 400 EUR. Payment details are described in the Scholarship Award Agreement.

3. One Scholarship will be awarded.

4. The decision on awarding the Scholarship belongs to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague.

5. The Scholarship is open to candidates applying for the Master’s Programme in Computer Science, study branch Computational Linguistics, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. Candidates must meet the Entry Requirements for the Master’s Programme in Computer Science.

6. To apply for the CLS, you have to apply for the Master’s Programme in Computer Science, study branch Computational Linguistics using the Student Information System of the Charles University in Prague, and accompany your application with the following documents:

(i) application for the CLS (no prescribed form);
(ii) curriculum vitae;
(iii) letter of interest;
(iv) list of publications (if applicable);
(v) transcript(s) of records;
(vi) photocopy of diploma (if applicable);
(vii) two letters of recommendation from academic supervisors or employer.

All these documents must be written in or translated into English. Documents under (i)-(vi) should be uploaded (preferred format of documents is pdf) to the Student Information System of the University.

7. Candidates must not be recipients of any other external scholarships or grants for a living allowance.

8. The deadline for submitting applications is 31 May

9. Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome by 30 June 2016 at the latest. The offer of the Scholarship must be accepted by the date indicated in the letter offering it. If a candidate declines the Scholarship or does not take it up, the Dean may offer the Scholarship to another candidate.

10. The successful candidate will be expected to complete the two-year programme and will study full-time. If the recipient does not complete the programme he will be liable to refund the scholarship amount in full.
