The Master in Language and Mind - Linguistics and Cognitive Studies from University of Siena is a highly interdisciplinary program aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of language as a human cognitive capacity, combining theoretical perspectives in Linguistics and philosophy with their different and many applications in domains such as Computational Linguistics.

Overview

All courses are taught in English, in a lively international environment at the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Science, a leader in multidisciplinary research.

The Language and Mind - Linguistics and Cognitive Studies program from University of Siena  also offers two main specializations through its two curricula “Linguistics and Cognition” and “Philosophy and Cognition”, with flexible options to combine teachings from both. In addition, a Double Degree program is active in collaboration with the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne as well as several Erasmus agreements with excellent departments and laboratories across Europe.

Career opportunities

The Master program in Language and Mind. Linguistics and Cognitive Studies, prepares students to undertake advanced doctoral studies and provides them with a specialized knowledge of the research issues in the fields of linguistics and philosophy. The program is centred on advance theoretical and experimental research on language and cognition.

Students will become able to address a specialized scientific bibliography, mostly in English and to be in contact with qualified publications and scientific journals, both on paper and online. The acquired capacity to apply theories and methods of linguistic research to the description and analysis of particular languages in a comparative perspective prepares the students to operate in the domain of advanced fundamental and applied research on human language.

In addition to the continuation of the studies in the framework of a graduate school, the job opportunities offered by the MA program can be identified in positions in which language and cognition are central and require an in-depth knowledge of theoretical models, of models of linguistic analysis, of experimental methodologies, of aspects of the interdisciplinary study of language as a cognitive capacity. The potential sectors of activities for the students who obtain the degree in Language and Mind. Linguistics and Cognitive Studies include the didactics of languages, the study of the pathologies of language and of possible rehabilitation techniques, the domain of computational applications to language related activities.

General requirements

  • Candidates are required to hold a three-year degree (B.A.)
  • The admission to the Master of a graduate who is in possession of a degree awarded by a foreign University or an equivalent foreign institute is evaluated by the Didactic Committee through a case by case assessment, considering the documentation received through online procedures, on the basis of the relevance and consistency of the qualification obtained abroad (and of the entire training course) with the training objectives of the Master. The Didactic Committee may request a further clarification on the motivations of the student to request admission and on his / her training path through a motivation letter. An interview may also be required, in English, to be held in video-conference.

Tuition Fee

The amount of tuition fees is based on both the student’s family income, as declared in the ISEE certification.The ISEE values for the calculation of contribution range from a minimum of € 16.000,00 up to a maximum of € 90.000,00 in order to properly consider the real economic conditions of the family. For ISEE less than € 16.000,00 no contribution is expected.
