Applicants are admitted into the Finance specialization upon application to the MBA Program. We consider your background, desire to work in the industry, career goals, as well as academic achievement in assessing your application.

Career Opportunities

As part of the Finance program at the University of Alberta, students have the option of completing a 4-month internship in between the first and second years of the program.  With the Finance specialization, students can work in Corporate and Investment Banking, Venture Capital, Private Equity, and corporate finance divisions of public and private companies. Key roles can include:

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

You only need to take one of these tests:

  •  The minimum score we would look for is an overall score at the 50th percentile. 

    This programme accepts GRE® scores. However, it does not provide a recommended score range.

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • You need the following GMAT score:

    Required score: 550

    The GMAT - or Graduate Management Admission Test - is a frequent requirement for admission at management and business schools across the world. The GMAT score ranges between 200 and 800 and measures the verbal and quantitative reasoning of test-takers.

Admission Criteria

In assessing a candidate's academic and professional qualifications, the following criteria are used:

  • Recognized undergraduate degree with GPA of at least 3.0 (see international GPA equivalents)
  • Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score
  • English Language Proficiency for Non-native English speakers (see exemptions)
  • Professional work experience
  • Statement of Intent letter
  • Two letters of reference
  • Admissions interviews 

Work Experience

At least 2 year(s) of work experience are required.

The admission committee gives strong consideration to professional experience and early career accomplishments, including potential for career growth and advancement. Applicants will ideally possess at least two years of full-time work experience after completion of an undergraduate degree. Alberta MBA students possess an average of five years of work experience.
