Major interest areas include social and emotional development, parent-child relations, family processes, sex differences, development across cultures and ethnic minority groups, learning, cognition, and psycholinguistics. The program is appropriate for students who wish to enter doctoral programs, and prepares them for academic, research, and applied careers in the field of child and developmental psychology.

Accreditation

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredits the entire institution of San Francisco State University. WASC is one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. The Western region covers institutions in California and Hawaii, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Pacific Basin, and East Asia, and areas of the Pacific and East Asia where American/International schools or colleges may apply to it for service.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or shall have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the appropriate campus authority;
  • be in good academic standing at the last college or university attended;
  • have a 3.0 GPA in their earned undergraduate degree or in the last 60-semester (90-quarter) units completed, or have earned a post-baccalaureate degree; and
  • meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations, as appropriate campus authorities may prescribe. In unusual circumstances, a campus may make exceptions to these criteria.

Funding

Middle Class Scholarship
  • provides a scholarship to undergraduate students with a family annual income of up to $150,000 by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). Students will be awarded the Middle Class Scholarship in early November of the award year.
  • If a different type of financial aid (e.g. loans) has already paid your tuition prior to the disbursement of your MCS, the Bursar's Office will automatically process a refund. You should receive your refund within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • If you paid for your tuition out of pocket, then you must request for a refund and submit it to the Bursar's Office located on the first floor of the Administration Building or at One Stop on the first floor of the Student Services Building. You should receive your refund within 4 weeks.
