Overview

Systems approach

Energy collection, conversion, transport, storage, distribution, and end-use application are all steps in providing energy services to society. All these elements form an energy system, which is complex and interacts with other systems in a multitude of ways. 

Transitions in energy systems and the merits of innovation for the individual components of each can only be analysed in the context of the complete system. This is why we place energy systems analysis at the very centre of the Energy Science programme at Utrecht University.

Interdisciplinary

Analysing energy systems requires a thorough knowledge of the fundamental scientific and technological principles of the discipline. This knowledge enables you to understand how the characteristics of individual technologies can influence their performance, as well as the impact of market and policy contexts on energy systems. This is why both economics and policy studies are also covered the programme.

Research in energy science

The programme has been developed by the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. This institute investigates and develops processes and opportunities for innovative change for sustainability. 

Energy and resource systems are just one of the areas researched at the institute, and this cutting-edge research informs the teaching on the programme. In addition, you will find yourself part of a truly international learning environment in which to prepare for your future career.

Career Prospects

The sustainable development of energy systems will be one of the main global challenges of this new century. Therefore, research institutes, businesses, consultancy firms, government organisations, and NGOs are active in the quest for energy efficiency improvement and more renewable energy sources. 

Many companies are taking up the challenge to develop new business in this area and there is a great demand for energy and resources specialists, which is increasing every day.

Professional Careers 

Graduates should be able to find employment in the private sector (energy companies), public sector, consultancy, and NGOs. Graduates will also find positions in international bodies, such as the European Union and the International Energy Agency.

Academic Careers 

The programme prepares students for a PhD-programme, which will ultimately lead to professions in scientific research. Graduates of the programme must be capable of writing a PhD dissertation.

General requirements

You are welcome to apply for the Energy Science Master’s programme. Please take into account that this is a selective master. You will be considered for admission to the programme if you hold a University bachelor degree and can demonstrate a high level of knowledge, motivation and command of methods and skills in the field.

With regard to the educational requirements you should possess:

  • background in either the life, natural and/or social sciences;
  • a strong affinity in the field of mathematics and for natural sciences (systems analysis  and e.g. chemistry, physics, biology, energy science);
  • a solid foundation in thermodynamics (e.g. properties of a substance, ideal gas equation of state, first and second law of thermodynamics, energy balance, download an example exercise here);
  • knowledge of energy analysis;
  • general insights in emerging technology issues and complex multidisciplinary problems;
  • proven research skills.
