
Overview
You’ll develop the advanced critical reading, writing, and research skills necessary to participate confidently and meaningfully with other English studies scholars and professionals, and to apply disciplinary knowledge beyond the field of English studies.
The Master of Arts in English at the National University is offered entirely online with small and interactive courses. You’ll benefit from the individual attention of professors. Choose from a variety of elective course offerings, including 17th and 18th century literature, Romanticism, Gothic, and Harlem Renaissance.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Research and apply relevant criticism in sustained analyses and interpretations of specific works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
- Evaluate the relevance and validity of different theoretical approaches (e.g., historicist, biographical, etc.) to the understanding of specific works of literature.
- Engage in informed critical discussion, both oral and written, of theoretical issues pertaining to the study of literature.
- Engage in informed critical discussion, both oral and written, of the works and criticism of a specific literary period or movement.
- Participate in rigorous critiques of the scholarly works of others.
- Revise and expand a scholarly paper to submit for publication in a scholarly or literary journal.

English majors develop strong skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, and analysis which are highly valued by employers in banking, sales, insurance, law, public relations, media, advertising, and business fields. There are many opportunities in journalism, publishing and editing, technical writing, advertising, teaching and public relations areas.

General requirements
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university where an overall grade point average of 2.5 or better was achieved, or where a grade point average of 2.75 or higher was achieved in the last 90 quarter units.
- Students with a grade point average of 2.0 to 2.49 may be admitted to the University if they have a satisfactory score on one of the following tests: GMAT, GRE, Miller Analogies Test, or an approved, standardized program-specific exam. These tests are NOT required for those with a GPA over 2.5.
- Students with an undergraduate grade point average of 2.0 to 2.49 may be accepted to National University on a probationary status (instead of taking the above tests).
- Preliminary documentation of prior education must be presented at required interview with an admissions advisor. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
