University rank #801 (WUR) ,
The 2nd-cycle study programme in Geography leads to "magisterij" (master's degree). It is implemented by the Faculty of Arts and is a unique and essential study option at the University of Maribor since it includes physical as well as social geographic elements with the purpose of training students for the sustainable development planning.

About

It gives answers to the biggest and most complex development dilemmas which Slovenia must tackle: how to manage and develop the economy without increasing the negative impact on the environment and its natural resources, how to educate people to be able to think and act sustainably, and how to integrate the economic, social, and environmental aspects into a sustainable progress. With the proposed study programme, students are going to built experiential knowledge about the local environment in order to recognise and identify the physical and social geographic functions of the area in question, which serve as the development potential for geographical regions, and how (on the basis of the before mentioned functions) to plan, design, manage, and run development projects in local communities and regions sustainably. Moreover, they are also going to learn how to maintain and sustain the development in specific geographical regions with the involvement of local communities.

Students acquire the following subject-specific competencies with the programme:
  • ability to understand socially-applied values of geographical science with regard to the environmental protection and its development in a particular geographical region;
  • ability to master and coherently connect geographical knowledge with the knowledge from other fields, and to apply it in the particular geographical region when it comes to its development;
  • ability to holistically analyse the landscape development factors, phenomena, processes, and their mutual relationships as the basis for understanding the principles of sustainable development at the local, state, and global level and for responsible space management;
  • ability to obtain the knowledge regarding the structure of different types of landscapes and to apply it when it comes to the region’s environmental protection and development;
  • ability to understand the importance of educating the public in order to develop geographical regions in a proportionate way;
  • ability to master the geographical dimensions of environmental protection;
  • ability to master the importance of protected areas and ecologically important areas which are perceived as a potential for the development of the geographical region; and
  • ability to master the cooperation with the public when it comes to the development planning at the local and regional level.
