The Europa-Institut at Saarland University is the second oldest institution of its kind in Europe. For more than six decades, the Europa-Institut has been excellently educating young academics from all over the world in European and international law.


Each year, 75 students from more than 30 countries come to the Europa-Institut for the one-year Master's program in European and international law. The program awards the title Master of Laws (LL.M.) and combines a practice-oriented approach with excellence in academic teaching. Highly qualified lecturers prepare the students of the Masters program for the specific demands of the European and international job market.
The program can be completed entirely in English, entirely in German or in a combination of both languages. It is divided into a nine-month study program, followed by a three-month period for the drafting of the Master's thesis. Five specialization study units are offered: Module 1 European Integration and Modules 2 to 5 with the study units European Economic Law, Foreign Trade and Investment, International Dispute Resolution and European and International Protection of Human Rights offer a high degree of specialization in quickly expanding professional fields within European and international law. With its unique mixture of lectures, seminars, interactive exercises, moot courts, language courses, communication skills training and discussions, the program ideally combines theoretical knowledge and practical application.


The Europa-Institut was certified by the ACQUIN agency. The program accreditation states that the Europa-Institut offers both excellent research opportunities and excellent quality in teaching. The Europa-Institut also received the “Certificate for Quality of Internationalisation (CeQuInt)” for the successful implementation of an internationalization strategy in its Masters program.

The Europa-Institut welcomes students with a university degree in law or in a comparable subject (business studies, humanities) from a German or foreign university. Graduates from the program often hold positions in European and international organizations, law firms, national governments and international companies.


In addition to professors teaching at Saarland University, the Europa-Institut hosts guest professors from an array of countries. Included are top EU civil servants from the Commission, Council, Parliament and the Court of Justice, as well as leading personalities from the judiciary, business world, administration and political sector.

    Following the lectures, a written or an oral exam have to be taken; Credit Points are awarded for almost all of the courses. A total of at least 45 CPs must be attained
    during the course of the study program. 15 additional CPs are awarded after the completion and approval of the Masters thesis. For completion of the program, a total number of 60 credit points have to be reached.

The requirements for admission are as follows:

  • a university degree in law, or in a comparable subject, from a German or foreign university and
  • proof of sound knowledge of German and/ or English

Please note that it is not necessary to commit in advance to undertaking the program in a specific language; if students develop language skills over the duration of their stay, they may still opt to combine English and German classes at that stage.
