Overview
Drawing from multidisciplinary methods of working, students will be confident to explore and extend the concepts of communication, sequential narrative and visualisation through research, practice and discursive critique.
The Illustration with Graphic Novel course, Leeds Arts University, allows students a stimulating, open thinking space for speculation, collaboration and an opportunity to explore the boundaries of what the disciplines can be.
Our Aim
- Enable you to focus on the subject and expansive field of Illustration practice and storytelling in greater depth than you may have encountered during previous study or experience. This will be achieved through shared insights which establish a broad overview of the discipline, its wide and transferrable professional application, alongside a focused look at the graphic novel.
- Support your creative development through celebrating imaginative and experimental approaches to exploring the subject. This will be done through mentoring you to uncover your own methods for Authorial Illustration and storytelling where you, as the ‘author’ of your creative project(s) will define, direct and design the content as well its tone, style or voice.
- Build your understanding of the relationship between theory, practice, industry and Illustration’s potential impact on the worlds we live in. You will be introduced to the critical conversations within contemporary global creative research which are most relevant to exploring illustration’s function and value. This will include reflecting on practical drawing and analogue play, establishing Communities of Practice and approaches to short-form and long-form content.
- Challenge existing approaches to Illustration and encourage innovative or interdisciplinary methods, which help you to find a suitable purpose, integrity and place for your work. You will explore creating impact through practice as well as locating key audiences. You will be supported to establish your own independent, bespoke ethos around the subject and its related fields in preparation for contemporary professional life or further study at PhD.
