Overview

Students who have earned the University of Kassel's Master of Science Mathematics degree are able to recognize, classify, formulate and solve complex problems of all kinds with a mathematical connection. The exact direction of study in the Master's program is based on the choice of mathematical focus and application subjects.

About the course

The central research areas of the Institute of Mathematics are in current areas of analysis, computer algebra, optimization, stochastics, and numerics. The special feature of mathematics at the University of Kassel is its computer and application orientation, which is particularly evident in interdisciplinary projects with engineering sciences. There are no admission restrictions. The language of instruction is German. Studies begin in the summer or winter semester.

All this is necessary, but not sufficient, as one would put it in mathematics: Personally, a high scientific and technical interest, a basically analytical-logical way of thinking, stamina and preferably a good knowledge of English for dealing with technical literature are required. On the subject of job prospects: The fact that a classic job description of "mathematician" does not exist also results in many degrees of freedom. In fact, mathematics graduates are sought-after specialists in a wide variety of fields. Therefore, many doors open, especially to well-paid management positions.

Career

Anyone who still considers mathematics to be unworldly should realize how practical its professional fields are, on the contrary. Banks and insurance companies, but also, for example, logistics and telecommunications companies or software and consulting firms, need specialists capable of analysis who can think in complex contexts and forge solutions from them that are suitable for everyday use. Mathematicians are also in demand in research and development across all industries.
