Overview
Our master’s degree is unique in the UK for the breadth of materials and sustainable construction methods it introduces you to. You’ll explore renewable and low-carbon engineering materials that are key to infrastructural development worldwide.
Focusing on sustainability, you'll learn how to use materials and design to enhance our built environment. You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the behaviour of structural materials and their characteristics. When you graduate, you’ll have the skills to analyse and design engineering structures with innovative materials and non-conventional technologies.
Learn from experts in the fieldOur course draws on the research knowledge in our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials. Our academics’ international collaborations and research expertise feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience. Our research was ranked 1st in the UK in the Architecture and the Built Environment submission in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
Use specialist facilitiesWe have a range of facilities to support your studies. Our laboratories and workshops contain machinery and equipment that meet industry standards. These include concrete, timber, advanced materials, and geomaterials laboratories. You’ll also have access to specialist computer and teaching facilities. Our links with the BRE mean that you could have the opportunity to use their facilities through project work.
Start your future hereIf you want to pursue a career as a civil or structural engineer, or go further as a researcher or academic, our course equips you to take the next step. We work with industrial partners to make sure that you develop the practical and theoretical expertise that employers value in graduates. These include, technical, communication and design skills. You’ll also have the chance to study with students on other construction-related MSc courses, preparing you for working in industry. Our students have gone on to work in some of the top UK and overseas engineering and design companies, including AECOM, Atkins and Foster & Partners.
Some of our graduates choose to further their studies with us through our PhD programme to pursue academic and research careers.
