Overview
Arts University Plymouth was voted by students as University of the Year for SW England at the annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024, won best Small or Specialist Institution in 2022 and was voted second-place in the same category in 2023.
The Ceramics programme from Arts University Plymouth encourages makers to develop an individual voice and gives you the tools to establish yourself as a ceramicist. You will be challenged and encouraged to explore your aesthetic and conceptual sensibilities through experimentation in the medium of ceramics.
This programme emphasises research through making, to develop an informed critical framework, driven by material thinking. The programme is uniquely placed to offer a rich cross-disciplinary practice; you will have access to our spacious and well-equipped metal and jewellery studios, as well as ceramics, glass and resistant materials workshops, and our superbly equipped Fab Lab.
You will have the opportunity to critically engage with current debates within the subject area, relevant institutional contexts and partners and be encouraged to consider what it means to be an artist in the 21st century.
Career
Alumni of our Graduate School pursue careers in the fields of fine art, craft and design, as practising artists, teachers, curators, and as gallery, theatre and technical professionals. Others go on to prepare for doctoral study, and set up viable projects as socially engaged and community-based practitioners.
The second module offers an opportunity to test out the practices being investigated by individual students within an appropriate, live setting.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- The comprehensive Masters structure, which is shared across our specialist programmes, enables our postgraduate students to focus on creative strategies and processes through three sequential modules which support you in investigating, testing and developing your ideas.
- The core tuition focuses on training, research methodology, critical thinking, design, practice-led research methods and professional and conceptual frameworks, with an opportunity for negotiated study under specialist supervision for MFA and MA by Research students. All of our programmes have access to outstanding workshop facilities in the university.
