
Overview
The Department offers a number of special postgraduate courses each year some of which are scheduled to facilitate attendance by practising engineers from industry. The majority of courses are full-time and cover a variety of topics.
The Master of Science in Engineering Specialising in Civil Engineering at University of Cape Town can be either by dissertation only or by coursework (approved by your supervisor) and dissertation.

Other requirements
General requirements
- are graduates of the Faculty or of an engineering or geomatics programme of any other university recognized for the purpose; or
- hold an appropriate BSc(Hons) degree; or
- hold an approved three-year degree and (i) they have a minimum of five years’ experience relevant to the field in which they propose to study, or (ii) they in addition to the standard programme requirement first complete a minimum of 144 credits of approved coursework; or
- have passed at any university or institution recognized for the purpose, such examinations as are, in the opinion of the Senate, equivalent to the examinations prescribed for the degree of BSc(Eng) or BSc(Geomatics) at the University; or
- have in any other manner attained a level of competence which in the opinion of Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty, is adequate for the purpose of admission as a candidate for the degree.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Funding
Limited financial support is available in the form of scholarships, bursaries and student loans. Certain awards are granted exclusively on academic merit, while others take financial need into account.
