Program Description
The Southwest Borderlands situates participants uniquely such that they might critically examine issues confronting Spanish-speaking and heritage language populations.
A key dimension of the Education (Bilingual Education) program at New Mexico State University is the advancement of issues related to equity and social justice by encouraging participants to serve as advocates for bilingual children, their families and communities.

General requirements
- Candidates who apply for the Bilingual Education (Spanish/English) endorsement (PreK-12) must successfully demonstrate language proficiency as measured by the Spanish language examination PRUEBA. Similar requirements are necessary for candidates of Bilingual Education for Navajo and Pueblo language groups. These examinations are administered through the New Mexico State Department of Education.
- A graduate international student must hold at minimum a four year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and is able to demonstrate English proficiency, both written and oral by submitting an official TOEFL or IELTS score report.
- Please visit the admissions page for information regarding the application review process. The Graduate School generally offers admission to international students for Fall and Spring semesters only. See academic departments for programs that enroll students in the summer.
