History and Philosophy of Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon  is intended for undergraduates of all subjects, from sciences to the humanities and the arts. It is conveniently located in the university campus at the heart of Lisbon, close to the National Library and the National Archives. It is taught in English. The MSc in History and Philosophy of Science offers students a structured, broad and solid training in topics in history and philosophy of science within an interdisciplinary context. It covers main themes, debates and methodological trends which shape the disciplines of history of science and of philosophy of science in the international context, with a special focus on the analysis of contemporary issues. Additionally, it provides an understanding of the specificities of past and present science in Portugal.

Profiting from its association with the University of Lisbon, which holds an impressive scientific heritage, including the largest colonial collections in Portugal, two astronomical observatories, three botanical gardens, and the National Museum of Natural History and Science, located at the premises of the 19th century Polytechnic School of Lisbon, the MSc course also offers training and research opportunities in scientific collections, object-based narratives and musealization of scientific and technological heritage.

Beyond providing the background to enroll in doctoral research in history of science or in philosophy of science, followed eventually by an academic career, History and Philosophy of Science postgraduates have gone to work in a range of professions from science museums to private and public institutions eager to preserve their scientific and technological heritage to institutions concerned with science communication and public awareness of science and institutions of scientific management.
