About

The Postgraduate Certificate in Neuromodulation and Pain Management will give you the academic background and specialist skills needed to deepen your knowledge in this field. You will focus on anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology of the central and peripheral pain pathways.The modular nature of the programme is designed to fit around the needs of students in full-time employment. 

Overview

You’ll study modules on anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology of central and peripheral pain pathways. Through your studies, you will gain understanding of the role of neuromodulation in pain including, post spinal pain syndrome type 1 and 2, intractable neuropathic pain, refractory angina, complex regional pain syndrome, headache and pelvic pain, and evaluate current evidence.Furthermore, the modules will provide an insight into neuromodulation and pain management techniques such as optogenetic, chemogenetic and wireless neuromodulation. You will gain knowledge of functional neurosurgery in pain including deep brain stimulation, its role, indications and complications. You will also examine the surgical indications for neuropathic pain syndromes such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), phantom limb pain, anaesthesia dolorosa, post stroke pain, cluster headache and cancer pain, and gain an insight into procedural skills and long term management of patients.The programme is designed for you if you are seeking deeper understanding and further insights into this field, including the use of neuromodulation in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain symptoms.

Programme Structure

The modular nature of the programme is designed to fit in with the needs of students in full-time employment. You will receive the taught element of the modules in three-day blocks approximately every four to six weeks.To obtain a Postgraduate Certificate, you are required to complete 4 x 15 credit modules (60 credits).
